  2. VAS Services Idea Cellular has announced ‘i-Plan’ for its postpaid customers, allowing them to choose, create and customize their monthly plan from a bouquet of voice and data packs. With Idea i-Plan, customers can choose from an array of rental plans, starting from Rs. 199 to Rs. 999, depending on their usage pattern, needs and requirements. Customers can opt for a range of packs offering voice, SMS and data benefits. Idea is also offering the option of add-on packs which users can combine with their monthly rentals to create their best suited plan. The Idea i-Plan offer is available for all new and existing postpaid subscribers who can activate the plan by simply selecting the rental plan, followed by the free packs, and Top-up with any add-on pack if chosen. To choose the i-Plan, Idea customers can simply dial ‘121’ from their Idea connection or visit the nearest Idea store. Vodafone India and ICICI Bank on Wednesday launched ‘M-Pesa’ – a mobile money transfer and payment service in Haryana. This service will now be available across 62 Tehsils, 21 Districts through 1073 specially trained authorized agents and across 110 Vodafone exclusive retail mini stores in Haryana. ‘M-Pesa’ empowers the unbanked and under-banked sections of the population gain access to financial services via the mobile phone. ‘M-Pesa’ effectively leverages the combined strengths of Vodafone’s global expertise in the domain of mobile payments and significant distribution reach in India plus the security of financial transactions provided by ICICI Bank. The innovative use of mobile technology makes it possible for customers to enjoy a fast, simple and secure way to transfer money and make payments. CorporateAnnouncement January 14, 2014: BSNL plans to set up mobile towers in naxal areas by end of this year The state owned telecom company BSNL has decided to set up mobile towers in naxal-affected areas by the end of this year. The company has also selected a vendor and identified 450 locations to install towers. BSNL has already installed 363 towers and identified another 450 sites for setting up towers. BSNL floated a tender in August for the supply, installation, testing, operation and maintenance of 2G GSM network towers at 1,315 sites for five years in left-wing extremist areas of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal. The Cabinet cleared the three-year old proposal to set up mobile towers at a cost of about Rs 3,046 crore in naxal-affected states in June, following an attack that killed 27 people, including senior Congress leaders, in Chhattisgarh in May. BSNL was mandated to set up the towers, the cost of which will be borne by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), which is administered by DoT. The USOF was created under the National Telecom Policy of 1999 to help provide telecom services at affordable prices to people in rural areas where no phone facilities are available. ZTE, the telecom equipment maker, aims to ship more than 60 million smartphones globally this year, as it tries to grab more share of a highly competitive market dominated by Samsung and Apple. The company shipped around 40 million smartphones last year. ZTE, which competes with cross town rival Huawei Technologies in the telecom equipment and mobile device businesses, fell out of the top five global smartphone vendors list last year, according to third-quarter data from researchers IDC and Gartner.At home in China, the world’s largest mobile phone market with more than one billion subscribers, ZTE competes with both Samsung Electronics and Apple, as well as domestic makers Lenovo, Huawei and privately held Xiaomi. TRAI, CoAI and DoT January 10, 2014: DoT may not implement uniform spectrum charge January 14, 2014: COAI says, do not mandate only BSNL and MTNL connections for government staff The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is trying to reach a mid-way on the issue of annual spectrum charges which might see it neither implementing the uniform level of 3 percent as recommended by  TRAI nor maintaining it at the current upper limit of 8 percent. GSM industry body Cellular Operators Association of India has demanded that the government implement Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI’s) suggestion for a uniform SUC – 3 to 5 per cent – from April 1, across the telecom services sector for the success of the next round of spectrum auction scheduled to start from February 3.If TRAI’s recommendations are accepted by the government then it will burden firms holding broadband wireless access spectrum, including RJIL that at present pays 1 per cent SUC, it added. In a letter the industry body of GSM operators Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to Department of Telecommunications (DoT) not to implement not to implement a proposal of “mandating only” BSNL and MTNL connections for government staff and enterprises  it would be “anti-competitive”. In a bid to enhance the revenues of BSNL and MTNL, the government had proposed that union ministries, public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies give preference to the services of the state-run telcos. n November last year also, COAI had asked DoT not to implement the proposal. COAI said implementation of the proposal violates Article 14 of the Constitution of India and against various judgments of the TDSAT where BSNL/MTNL have been directed to be treated equally with other private operators.

Others January 2, 2014: Number of Mobile Internet users to reach 155 million by March, says IAMAI A report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) said, the number of mobile users accessing web on handsets is expected to reach 155 million by March this year. This number is further expected to grow to 185 million by June, 2014. The number of mobile internet users is going to reach 155 million in India by the end of March 2014, and 185 million by June 2014, maintaining a quarter-on-quarter growth of 20 percent, a report by IAMAI and IMRB International said. At the end of December 2013, the number stood at 130 million as against a user base of 110 million in October 2013. According to the report, the number of mobile Internet users in urban India is expected to grow from 103 million in December 2013 to 126 million in March 2014 and further touch 153 million by June. Rural India is also expected to register strong growth to touch 32 million users (in June 2014) from 27 million in December 2013. The report also found that the average revenue per user (ARPU) has dropped to Rs 387 from Rs 460 in 2012. However, the percentage amount spent on mobile Internet has gone up to 45 percent in 2013 from 43 per cent in the previous year. The report also revealed 35 percent of the mobile Internet users are spending between Rs 100 and Rs 500 monthly on their phone expenses.

Due to lack of resources and absence of necessary infrastructure necessary for the purpose the plan has surprised many, A task force was formed under the leadership of Mahesh Adhikary, member of Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA), the government-owned telecom regulatory body of Nepal, and has been asked to submit the report along with recommendations to the ministry within 30 days. The task force also includes representatives from Prime Minister’s Office, National Planning Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology and experts from Tribhuvan University, among others. .
