Objectives • Establish strong and effective networks involving public bodies/community sector • Enhanced understanding and mutual respect on a cross border/ cross community basis • Promote dialogue and discussion among participants about the issues of peace and reconciliation • Enhanced community capacity through an extensive education and training programme • Greater participation of under represented groups in sport including girls e.g. Gender, Ethnic Minorities & Special Needs • Increased cross community interaction and new community involvement through the project • Improved employment opportunities through the project e.g. coaching • Increased involvement in physical activity, self esteem and confidence • Change in perceptions of isolated and single identity societies

Role of Sports Development Officer • Overall management and organisation of the Youth Sport Programme • Constantly liaising with co-ordinators regarding project issues • To monitor and evaluate programme (Via website) • Report project progress to SEUPB and management committee • Managing a quality after-school programme with the School Sports Co-ordinators • The delivery of training programmes to co-ordinators, coaches & leaders • Liaise with Peace & Reconciliation facilitators regarding workshops • Linking with partner agencies to ensure the promotion of Cross-Border co-operation at all levels • Establishing networks to ensure sustained opportunities

Role of Co-ordinator • The organization and management of a quality after-school sports programme • Develop school links with feeder primary schools • Organise and deliver an effective cross border programme within your cross border school cluster • Ensure effective promoting and marketing of the project (Use of logos, agencies involved etc) • Quarterly reporting of extra curricular and cross border activities (participation breakdown & budgets etc) • Act as point of contact for SDO, principals, coaches, parents and pupils. • Observe coaches where possible to assess level of coaching • After six week extra curricular programme is completed claim forms need to be signed by co-ordinator, coach and teacher from the school which has received the coaching and returned to SDO • Assist SDO in the recruitment of coaches

  7. 2 Year Targets • Establish a Project management board; • Train coaches and establish a database; • Recruit and train 30 co-ordinators; • Create cross border clusters of schools; • Select appropriate feeder schools for each post primary school; • Co-ordinators to design tailored coaching programmes for each feeder school; • Select community sports clubs for community festivals; • Undertake 900 extra curricular coaching programmes to commence and run continuously to the end of the project; (Co-ordinators)

  8. 2 Year Targets • Deliver 4 cross border jamborees; (SDO) • Deliver 60 cross border sports days: (Co-ordinators) • Deliver 30 cross border student exchanges; (15 SDO & 15 Co-ordinators) • Deliver 30 cross border primary school days; (SDO with Co-ordinators) • Deliver 2 primary school art competitions; (SDO) • Deliver 4 community ‘come and try’ festivals; (SDO) • Support development of leadership awards; (SDO with Co-ordinators) • Support 30 peace and reconciliation workshops; (SDO with Co-ordinators) • Organise 2 cross border conferences for coaches (SDO) (Oct 2010 & Oct 2011) • Undertake an external evaluation of the Project at Mid and end points of the project. • Distribute newsletters / Annual Report to identified stakeholders

Group Questions • Group 1: Identify restrictions to the completion/success of the project? • Group 2: This project is going to deliver a sports leadership training programme to senior students – what elements/areas should this leadership award cover? Can it compliment any current programme within your school? • Group 3: Scenario – As a co-ordinator you are unable to access a coach off the database for a particular sport/activity – what are your options to identify a coach? • Group 4: Scenario – Your working in cross border cluster of schools/co-ordinators and you have a detailed cross border programme to deliver as a team – what methods of communication and planning can be used to successfully organise and complete these days? • Group 5: Through the cross border/cross community clusters, what do you think your (A) Students and (B) School with gain from this experience?

Project Strengths • Viewed as a model of good practice by Sports Councils and statutory agencies. • All inclusive/targets children of all ages and abilities/male and female (51% female/49% male). • Targets disadvantaged/rural areas. • Provides a wide choice of activities for children to enjoy. • Variety of quality coaches • Peace and Reconciliation element of the project will encourage more cross community/cross border interaction

Project Strengths Cont’d • Encourages participants to begin on the pathway leading towards lifelong participation in sport/exercise • Takes emphasis off competition and focuses on participation/fun • Delivers programmes for children with Special Needs. • Creates links between schools and wider community. • Helps to drive other initiatives in the area of sport and recreation and developed effective partnership working at management level. • Training and Education opportunities for co-ordinators, coaches and students • Strong links established with SSRP and is constantly working to enhance local sports provision both through its own work and complementary initiatives.

Recruitment of Coaches? • SDO’s will compile a coaches database • Only coaches that have been vetted and suitably qualified are eligible to coach on the project. • If you know any new coaches in your local area, contact SDO’s with coach details so the relevant checks can be carried out. • Local council database (Through SDO) • Pupils may know of local coaches • Local clubs • PTA in local primary schools • Contact other Co-ordinators • Students and teachers in own school
