Habitat • Snapper is found on all coast of New Zealand • They live in rocky areas and reefs of up to 200 m deep. There are a lot living around Nelson and the Marlborough sounds • Snapper can be found on the inner Hauraki gulf
Look like • Its colour is pink blue and golden and some have silvery pinkish skin with lots of bright blue spots down its sides it usually grows between 30 and 50 centimetres some times even 90 centimetres
Life cycle • When the female lays her eggs all of the snapper eggs are boys fist. then they are a female.

Snapper (Pagrus auratus) • Size: up to 70cm • Snapper was once the most abundant commercial species on the coastal North Island fisheries but is being over-fished. Small snapper are known as Bream. Shy, flighty fish. All snapper begin life as females. During third and fourth year half change their sex, going through a hermaphroditic stage to become males. Highly intelligent and elusive. Can prize paua and mussels from rocks with sharp canine-like teeth and crush them. The scales of the snapper show growth rings but these can be affected by unusual weather conditions or variations in food supply. Live up to 63 years. Lovely eating fish
