The Present Political System of the UK • Is a multi-party system • The twolargestparties in the UK: • Leftwing > Labour Party • Right wing> Conservative Party
Monarchy • The British political system is headed by a monarchy. • Queen Elisabeth – Ceremonialfunction. • The most important practical power of the monarch is to choose the Member of Parliament to form a government. • However, the monarch follows the choice of the political leader with the most seats in The House of Comons.
The U.K. Parliament • The British Parliament – Westminster • Consists of twohouses/chambers: • LowerChamber • Upper chamber
House of Commons • This Is the LowerChamber, ithas the most authority. • 650 members of Parliament. • Its main roles are: • Consider and propose new laws. • Asking questions about current issues, either in the commons chamber or in committees. • Debate issues of the day. • Each member represents a geographical constituency.
House of Commons • Every citizen aged 18 or over can vote. • The next General Election will be on 7 May 2015. • Elections take place, by law, and the elected last until a max. of 5 years.
House of Lords • This is the Upper Chamber but the one with less authority. • 800 active members
House of Lords • Its main roles are: • Revising legislation • Check Government by examining its activities
