  4. Good Autobiographical Writing… • does not rely on an exciting life • is based on an ordinary event to which readers can relate • is told vividly, but is not fantastical

  5. The “Problem” of Autobiographical Writing • Old self vs. new self • Old view of person X vs. new view of person X • Old values vs. new values which threaten, disrupt, challenge old views Freewrite for 10 minutes on any of these three!

  6. Find the Tension Summarize your freewriting in one sentence. This sentence should allude to the tension that will be in the story.

  7. Plot • in medias res • level of detail • pacing of details

  8. Typical Plot Order • Gripping opening • Introduce characters/fill in background • Build tension via the opposition • Climax • Reflection See page 153

  9. Character • Which ones to include • Show through dialogue rather than narration (see example on page 154) • Show through a series of events to reveal who the person is

  10. Setting • How important is the setting to the point of the story? Work the writing activity on page 155-156.

  11. Theme • Rarely explicitly stated • Often debated by readers Read “No Cats in America” on page 167
