  1. Representation Study

Firstly • I would like to establish why I have chosen the Red Hot Chili Peppers as my band to complete this representation study on… • Firstly I decided I was going to use the band due to my original aspirations to have a similar style ‘rock band’ to be featured as the main photo on my front cover. • I was hoping that by breaking down these photo’s this study would help me find some interesting photo’s and also make me think further about mise en scene, background, setting, colour cohesion etc when composing my photo’s for my publication.

  3. Direct mode of address. The direct eye contact with the camera in my opinion is more poignant and perhaps makes the photo more iconic. In addition Kiedis’ hair is deliberately covering one of his eyes to add elements of mystery and ambiguity to the photo’s and could be constructed to highlight darker elements of the bands past. Other band members are out of focus. Again putting more emphasis on the recognisability of the front man Kiedis. Fairly rural setting. Perhaps colloquial setting is used to help the band appeal and relate to the ‘everday person’ as opposed to the setting being very grandiose and lavish which may have negative connotations with relation to the issue of class. Kiedis’ tattoos are deliberately shown. Personally I would argue that Kiedis’ tattoos are on display as often iconic rock figures are known for sporting multiple tattoos; Kiedis is no exception. The inclusion of his tattoos helps to re-establish the fact that he is in the rock and roll hall of fame, and therefore is a classic figure in the rock music genre. The lack of upper clothing is undoubtedly used to reinforce the idea that this is a classic rock band. As stereotypically speaking many rock artists are renowned for not wearing a shirt whilst performing (in particular Kiedis himself).

The inclusion of the horse in this photo is a subtle contextual link to their 2006 single ‘Dani California’, as that tracks album artwork iconically featured a horse thus for this photo they are referencing that particular song, perhaps in an attempt to attract a similar large audience that the very successful single did. Background consisting of crashed cars could be used to highlight the wild and dangerous nature of a rock band like the Chili peppers. Moreover another interpretation is that potentially they could be again using the background to mock the establishment (the police). This idea is reinforced by the fairly comedic and at times childish facial expressions by the band members almost as if they are mocking the police. Bold colours are used to help the band members stand out. Partly due to the inclusion of the three primary colours (red, yellow, blue). Attire: Clothing of police uniforms is used most likely to represent an anti- establishment attitude. Again a number of tattoos are on display. Again I believe that outlandish tattoos are often associated with many rock groups such as the Chili Peppers and help reinforce their image.

  5. The inclusion of the mise-en-scene of shaving Josh is a conceptual point. As this single was the first time the band featured new guitarist ‘Josh Klinghoffer’ as opposed to their iconic guitarist John Frusciante. Thus due to Klinghoffer being younger and it being his first appearance in the group a decision was taken to shave him in the photo as if implying it was his first shave much like it is his first appearance in the band. Background seems significantly toned down compared to other backgrounds, the white/ plain background in my opinion puts more emphasis on the mise en scene and the facial expressions of the artists. Very abnormal colour of Fleas hair (the bassist) helps to establish the psychedelic and wild side of the band. Facial expression of the drummer Chad Smith is very wild which again in my opinion is used to help show how wild and crazy the band can be at times. Neutral colour cohesion use of colours such as greens and whites. -Not wanting to stand out

  6. Interesting take on the classic image of the Beatles’ Abbey Road photo. Black and white colouring is used in my opinion to help show the similarities to the original version. Black and white also gives the photo a more retro authentic feel. The mise-en-scene of including ‘Socks on their c***s’ (as they used to call it) again helps to highlight the wild psychedelic aspects of the band which helps to portray them as a wild, untamed rock band.

  7. Conclusion (Common themes across the photo’s) • Quite often the frontman (lead singer) dominates the photo as he is the most recognisable figure/image of the band. • Quite often the facial expressions of the band members and the mise-en-scene can be quite wild and unconventional which just helps to reinforce the daring and dangerous aspects of a rock band of this ilk.
