The Gospel According to Markpart 11“Who touched Me?”Mark 5:21-43
Many times we do exactly the same thing, we don’t come to God until we have exhausted all our own efforts.
He was willing to beg, to bow down, to make a complete fool of himself if that’s what it would take to persuade Jesus to give his daughter a life giving touch.
It is simply amazing that Jairus shows no doubt, this is no “hail Mary”, Jairus has absolute faith in Christ.
Jesus could have simply told Jairus to go home and his daughter would be well. But I think Jesus wanted to spend time with Jairus, Jesus knew Jairus had risked it all to beg Jesus
For her to venture into town amongst the people would have been rare. On the occasions when she needed to go, she would have announced herself much like that of a leper; shouting unclean, unclean!
Her faith is exceptional, she bet her once in a lifetime chance for healing on the belief that a mere touch of Jesus robe would reverse her 12 year affliction.
Her need was great, her faith was great, and her actions were commensurate with them both, great! Immediately, no hesitation, she was healed. Simultaneously, Jesus immediately felt the power of God colliding with the power of faith.
Healing happens when it rests firmly in His will. And, while she had great faith, her faith alone could not heal her, but her faith demonstrated her belief in Him.
She made a full confession. Jesus knew anyway, but He wanted her to lift her head up, no need to bow your head in shame any more.
After all, she was now a child of the New Kingdom, and Jesus let her know, He said “Daughter.”
Questions may have streamed within him, “Why did we have to delay.” “If we hadn’t of delayed my daughter might still be alive.”
Jesus reminds Jairus to continue in faith. Jairus had come to Him in faith, and Jesus was saying, “keep on believing.”
These three disciples will also be the same ones chosen to see the Transfiguration and accompany Christ in the garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus knew they would not understand, that death means nothing to the creator of life. Furthermore, there really is no death, not until the end of the age and the time of the second death
How foolish we look when with our unbridled mouths we speak in ignorance. The words Jesus spoke “Talitha, cumi,” was Aramaic. Mark knowing His audience was primarily Gentiles knew they would not be familiar with the language; therefore he translated it for us.
Mark, true to his goal, is presenting us with a complete picture of the person of Jesus, kind and compassionate, yet God in the flesh, with authority over even life and death.
Even knowing the people loved Him more for what they could get, than who He truly was; He still always met their needs.
Jesus had in his hand all the power of heaven, a simple touch from Him could change a life forever.
We may all ask ourselves today, “Have we been touched by the Master?”But, I tell you, a better question might be this, “Have we reached out to the Master and touched Him?”
