Presentation to Provincial Review ISRP February 2002 Washington Department of FISH AND WILDLIFE Shillapoo Wildlife Area Enhancement and Maintenance Proposal FY 04 and 05 Project #96BI97789
OVERVIEW: Currently 2,371 acres. Adjacent to City of Vancouver within the Vancouver Lake Lowlands Primary management emphasis: Wintering Waterfowl Habitat: Canada Geese High Quality Herbaceous Wetlands Agriculture/Grazing at reduced levels Reestablish Native habitats: Riparian Forested Wetland Oak
Lower Columbia/Columbia Estuary Subbasin Shillapoo Wildlife Area
PROJECT PARTNERS Ducks Unlimited Bonneville Power Administration US Fish and Wildlife Service Vancouver/Clark Parks US Army Corps of Engineers Natural Resources Conservation Service Vancouver Wildlife League
INDICATOR AND UNIQUESPECIES Canada Goose Western Meadowlark Mink Yellow Warbler Great Blue Heron Mallard/Dabbling Duck Black-Capped Chickadee Sandhill Crane Bald Eagle Great Egret Salmonids Purple Martin (cavity nesters) Tundra Swans
Agricultural Habitat (Acreage to decrease)
Pasture Habitat (Acreage to decrease)
Emergent Wetland (Acreage to increase)
Forested Wetland (Acreage to Increase)
Oak Habitat (Acreage to Increase)
Riparian Forest (Acreage to Increase)
PLANNED MAJOR ENHANCEMENTS Acquire remaining private lands within Shillapoo Lake (400 acres) Reestablish Native Wetland Plant Communities. Water Level Management Moist Soil Management Practices Reestablish Riparian and Oak Forest Enhanced Level weed control Upland Goose Forage Management Pasture Management Cover Crops
Shillapoo Lake Concept Goal: Establish High Quality Herbaceous Native Wetland Plant Community Current Proposal: Split into several independently managed units Establish gravity-fed hydraulic connection Rock filter or screens to exclude carp and warm water species to meet plant community objectives. Also excludes Salmonids
Would salmonids benefit from an open connection to Shillapoo Lake? Entrapment? Predation? Hydrology? Juvenile feeding/rearing habitat quality? Access? Temperature? Re-evaluation
Relationship to Subbasin Summary Lake River riparian habitat Area of “special biological significance” Floodplain linkage and improved rearing areas Vancouver Lake and Vancouver/Clark Parks Unit. “Productive agricultural lands provide habitat for numerous species of concern” Control of invasive non-native vegetation
