Write out the list of countries from the box below. What is the English version of each one? Can you match them to the countries on the map?
Every country is either “masculine” or “feminine”. This is called the “gender”. Can you work out the gender of the countries from our list? What clues are there? Where else could you look to help?
It is important to know the gender of a country, because the word for “to” is different for masculine and feminine countries. Look at these examples and copy them into your book. Extension Task There are also some countries that are “plural”. Can you think of any countries that might be plural in English? Task: Using a dictionary, find 5 more countries that are “masculine”, 5 that are “feminine”, and 2 that are “plural”.
