Nouns 34-55 Definition: A noun is a person, idea, place, or thing • Common noun- a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea (usually not capitalized) Ex: horse, schematic, explorer, colony • Proper noun- A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing, or idea. (ALWAYS capitalized) Ex: Savannah, James Oglethorpe, The Anne • Concrete-A noun that can be observed with the senses. Ex: Ship, clay, conquistador, crops • Abstract- A noun that names and idea, feeling, quantity, or charictoristiic. Ex: • Possessive- A type of noun that establishes ownership. Ex: James’s, • Collective- A word that names a group of people or things. Ex: Natives, Explorers
Punctuation Definition: the use of standard marks in writing to separate words into sentences, clauses, and phrases in order to clarify meaning. • capitalization – placement of capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, name or important place. Ex: The slaves of Georgia work for the colonists such as James
Clauses/ phrases 186-188 • Clauses-A group of words that contain a subject and a verb. Ex: • Independent-Complete thought. Also a complete sentence • Dependent-Not complete. Considered a fragment • Phrases-
Sentence structure • Simple-Sentence that contains a verb and subject Ex: The ship set sail • Compound- contains two or more independent clauses. Ex: The malcontents plow their fields, and they plant mulberry trees. • Complex-Contain a independent, and dependent clause. Ex: James, who is a trustee of GA, enforces the laws in place from the king
Subject/verb agreement • Properly joining a subject and a verb • Singular/plural- A singular noun must have a singular verb, while a plural noun needs a plural verb Ex: Oglethorpis a famous explorer. The trusties are important to GA’s history
Preposition • Preposition-explains where (mostly) • Times • Place • Direction • Agent • Instrument • Phrase • Object of the Prep.-the noun that follows a preposition Ex: In1732, a charter was signed to the trusties to let them govern the new colony ofGeorgia.
Modifiers • Modifier-describes • Adjective-Describe a noun Quantitative-Place number on a noun Ex: King Henry the 2nd had three main reasons to develop Georgia • Qualitative-Explain about. Color, size, shape, ect. Ex: The Anne was huge and brown. • Predicate adjectives-Follows the linking verb and describes the subject Ex: Georgia’s colonization wasn’t an easy process • Adverbs-Describe a verb • Adverbs mostly end in ly • Can describe: Manner, place, time, frequency, degree Ex: The Ann sailed slowly to the new world.
Pronouns • Pronoun-Replaces a noun with a more general word • Personal-Particular thing or group Ex: He has more land than I do. • Possessive-Have ownership, or relationship Ex: Their crops grow more than mine do • Reflexive-When the subject’s action effects the subject Ex: The king himself allowed the trusties to colonize GA. • Relative-used when there is more to be said about a used noun Ex: James Oglethorp, who colonized GA was a sympathetic person. • Demonstrative-Points out a thing or things Ex: An early GA settler may have said,”This land is very valuable”.
