2. Setting & Significance • Setting- This novel takes place upon this island in the South Pacific during a war. The island was uninhabited except for the boys who survived the plane crash. • Significance- This book exemplified how society acts upon certain circumstances. By using little boys as main characters in which suppose to represent innocence; turns out that they are so innocent after all.

3. Subject & Theme Statements • Themes: • Civilization VS. Savagery- The concern of the lord of the flies is the conflict between two competing impulses that exist within all human beings: -the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good vs. to act violent. This theme was known as the driving force of the novel because they had to transitioned themselves to live in such barbaric conditions. • Loss of Innocence- As the boys arrived at the island they were well-behaved children and then they changed into cruel people that had grown apart from civilization. At the beginning of the novel that’s when they lost their innocence. When the bloody offering to the beast has disrupted the paradise that existed before; a powerful symbol of innate human evil disrupting childhood innocence.

4. Major Characters: Roles + Descriptions • Ralph- is athletic, attractive, decently intelligent and the charismatic protagonist in the Lord of The Flies. Ralph is the primary representative of order, civilization, and productive leadership I the novel. • Jack- is a strong-willed, egomaniacal person. He represents the instinct of savagery, violence, and the desire for power. ( he was the leader of the choirboys) • Simon- he is the shy and sensitive one within the group of boys. Simon embodies a kind of innate, spiritual human goodness that is deeply connected with nature.

5. Minor Characters: Roles + Descriptions • Piggy- also known as Ralph’s “lieutenant” is a whinny, intellectual boy. His inventiveness leads to innovation. (makeshift sundial) Piggy represents the scientific, rational side of civilization. • Roger- also known as Jack’s “lieutenant” is a sadistic, cruel older boy. He Is also known for the person who killed Piggy by rolling the boulder onto him. • Sam and Eric- These two are twins and always together. The other boys treat them as a “single” person and call them “Samneric”. They end up falling for jack’s manipulation and coercion.

Major Symbols & Motifs • Major Symbols: • The Conch Shell- Ralph and Piggy discovered this at the beginning of the novel and it represents Civilized authority and democracy. • Piggy Glasses- They used these glasses to start a fire…They truly represent Insight, wisdom, and knowledge. • The Signal Fire- it was their to help capture passing ships so they can be rescued and it exemplified Hope. • The Beast-(imaginary) It frightened all the boys in representation of savagery that exist within all humans. Simon was the only person who reaches realization that the fear of the beast was within you. • Motifs: • Biblical Parallels- Lord of the Flies has been characterized as retelling episodes from the bible. The island is being compared to the Garden of Eden.

7. Protagonist Dilemma and Decision • The Protagonist of the novel is Ralph because he was basically the leader and the backbone of everything in the novel • The whole novel resulted in As the boys early days on the island mirrored the evolutionary progress of early man, the boys final days mirror some aspects of the development of human civilizations, which clash violently over religious and political differences. The main aspect of the contrast in action through out the book is that when the boys first arrived n the island they were so “pure” and the corruption of the island caused everyone evolved into something animal like; wild; corrupted.

8. Significance: Beginning and End • Significance in the beginning Ralph emerges himself as a leader and tells the others that they have to have some order/rules. And that they should take everything by a strategic standpoint and build fires so they can get rescued but, Jack realized that they would be far from rescued so hunting/food should be the first priority. • Significance in the End as some of the deaths of the boys…Seeing that they were all young chaps, the rescuer though all the bys were playing and didn’t take it seriously. Ralph cries and realizes that the island was the death of his innocence and he could o longer consider himself a vulnerable child.

9. Quotes With context and significance • “We may stay here till we die” – this quote exercises that even though the harsh conditions may affect them, The characteristic of young boys are coming out in fear of never being rescued. • “I was chief, and you were going to do what I said” – exemplifies powers and the characteristics of Ralphs. And this shows how the island has taken an effect on Ralph and how corrupted he has became. • “Ralph has stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. “A stone” “ No A shell”- this shows that this is how Ralph initially gain control of the boys and the shell because of he discovered it regardless of what piggy explained to him about the sound.
