What is it? • Using technology to hurt, harass, threaten, embarrass, or target a person • Can happen anytime • Used among young people (usually) • Sometimes only once but usually it is repeated
Why would they do that? • They have been bullied or treated badly by family or others • They have been hurt and want others to hurt like they do inside • They want to feel important • They want to feel in control or powerful • They want to impress others
Are there warning signs? • Withdrawing from usual interactions with family, friends, and activities • Avoiding school and social events • Changes in grades, mood, behavior, sleep, or eating habits • Protective or secretive about using the internet, etc. • Not wanting to talk about people at school or be a “snitch”
What are the effects? • Anxiety • Depression • Stress • Long term pain • Anger that is difficult to calm or control • Feeling hopeless and not wanting to live
What if I am being bullied? • Bullying is a reflection of the person who is bullying • It is NOT your fault and you are NOT alone • Tell a trusted adult about it & your concerns of telling • Do NOT respond to the bully because that fuels it • Keep any evidence such as messages and pictures • Block them from your phone and/or apps • With a trusted adult or peer, talk about how it affects you • Keep doing the things you enjoy
What else should I know? • Legal consequences: Jail and/or fines (it can be a CRIME called cyberharassment or cyberstalking whether you are under 18 years old or over 18 years old) • School consequences: suspension, loss of privileges, kicked out of extracurricular activities
