What is CELDT? California English Language Development Test PURPOSE: • To identify students who are English Learners • To monitor progress in learning English • To document English proficiency
Who is an English learner? An English learner is a student: • with a home language other than English • who is not yet proficient in English
How does the CELDT help my education? • It helps teachers know your English strengths & weaknesses • It shows your yearly English growth • It shows how close you are to English proficiency and redesignation
What will I be tested on? Four English Skill Areas 1. Listening 2. Speaking 3. Reading 4. Writing
How long does it take for students to complete the CELDT?The CELDT test is not a timed test. Testing times given here are approximate and will vary depending on the individual student:
Who gives the CELDT? • Only trained examiners give the test. • The listening and speaking parts of the CELDT are given individually to each student. • The reading and writing parts are given to groups of students.
You will take the CELDT test in 2 parts. You will take Part 1 of the test one week, then Part 2 of the test a different week.
In the first part of the CELDT, you will be tested on Listening & Speaking
During the Second Part of the CELDT test, you will be tested onReading & Writing

Reading •There are 3 parts to the Reading Section: 1. Word Analysis 2. Fluency and Vocabulary 3.Comprehension
Reading: Word Analysis •Teacher will say: • –“You will read the question and the different answer choices in your Test Book. Then, you will choose the answer you think is correct. Fill in the circle in your Answer Book that goes with the correct answer.”
Reading:Word Analysis Find the word that has the same beginning sound as octopus. ○Open ○October ○Orange ○Over

Fluency and Vocabulary •You are going to answer some reading questions. You will read the questions in your test book and answer them in your answer book. You may take as long as you need. •Read all of the answers. •Get rid of the ones you know are wrong!
Comprehension Read this story. Then do Numbers 1 through 3. Fill in the circle next to the answer you think is correct.
Writing There are 3 parts to the writing section: 1. Grammar and Structure 2. Writing Sentences Write a sentence that describes what is happening in each picture. Be sure to tell who or what is in the picture and describe in detail what is happening. Write only one complete sentence for each picture. Pay attention to grammar, capital letters, punctuation, and spelling. Make your writing clear. 3. Short Compositions Look at what is happening in the pictures and then finish writing the story. Think about what you will write before you write it. Use descriptions, details, and examples to make your story interesting. Your story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Write at least three complete sentences. Pay attention to grammar, capital letters, punctuation, and spelling. Make your writing clear.
Writing:scoring rubric A great answer is a 3. Here is an example: The girl is feeding the fish. Or The girl is giving food to the fish. Here are answers that scored lower that a 3 due to errors listed in the scoring rubric. The girl is giving Food to the Fish. The girl is feeb the fish. The girl is fiding her fish.
Remember: • Relax! • Do Your Best! • Do not be afraid to ask the test proctor: “Can you Repeat that Please?”
