  11. September 24, 2012 (B Day Classes) Agenda: • DSJ #5 • Number and Highlight All DSJs and DSRs • Microscope Notes • DSR #4 • SpongeBob Experiments • Microscope Quiz Study Guide

  12. DSJ #5 • Prompt: What is the main purpose of using a microscope? How has the microscope changed science and our lives? • This goes on 13B

  13. Microscopes

  14. Standards • 7.a. Select and use appropriate tools and technology (including calculators, computers, balances, spring scales, microscopes, and binoculars) to perform tests, collect data, and display data.

  15. Learning Objective • SWBAT know how to use the microscope properly. • SWBAT know the six steps on how to see a specimen on a slide.

  16. Microscopes • An optical tool that allows smallobjects to be seen larger. • 2 types of microscopes: • Light microscopes • Electron Microscopes

  17. Magnification • The ability to make things look largerthan they are • Light microscopes(which we will be using) has 2 lenses

  18. Objective Lenses • Objective Lensesmagnifies the object • 3 types of objectives • Lowobjective lens has a magnification of 4x • Mediumobjective lens has a magnification of 10x • Highobjective lens has a magnification of 40x

  19. Eyepiece • Eyepiece has a lens that magnifies the image clearly, with the magnification of 10x • Total Magnification is when you multiply the Eyepiece magnification with the objective magnification.

  20. Two Types of Adjustment Knobs: • Coarseadjustment knob, moves stageand is for initial focus • Fineadjustment knob, focuses object on higher power lenses.

  21. Steps to See the Slide with the Microscope • Turn on the light • Click the low objectivelens into place and lower the stage • Place the slideon the light hole • Focus the slide with the coarseadjustment knob • Click the higherlens into place • Focus the objectwith the fineadjustment knob

  22. DSR #4 • In at least 3 sentences, write about 3 new things you learned about microscopes. • This goes on 13B (Under DSJ #5)
