  1. Wind Formation

  2. Let’s Review… • Density: the amount of a substance to a given volume • Air Pressure: A force which results from the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area.

  3. Wind Formation • Air is a fluid and can move from place to place. • Fluids move from areas of high pressure to low pressure. • Winds are caused by differences in air pressure.

  4. Wind Formation • Let’s think about this: What factors are responsible for differences in air pressure? • Temperature and Density!!! • As air warms, it expands and becomes less dense. Lower density creates a lower air pressure.

  5. Wind Formation • Area 1: Heating causes air to expand and air pressure to decrease (low pressure). • Area 2: Unheated; no air expansion, thus air pressure remains constant (high pressure). Fluids move from areas of HIGH pressure to areas of LOW pressure (i.e. Area 2 to Area 1). The movement of these parcels of air creates WINDS!

  6. Wind Formation • Cotton Ball Demonstration

  7. Local Winds • Local winds are caused by unequal heating of the Earth’s surface within a small area • 2 Types: • Sea Breeze • Land Breeze Let’s design a diagram to help us understand!
