FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistics (FIES) • Heavily relying on national reporting: • Compilation: • Focal points -- usually, Ministry responsible for fisheries, sometimes Ministry of Agriculture, Natural resources, Statistics • Supplemental sources: Regional Fishery Bodies, Industry organizations • Annual reporting (end of August) and final compilation and dissemination in March to May • Intensive follow-ups (three rounds of reminders, push through Regional Bodies, FAO Regional and Sub-regional offices, personal connections, etc) including clarification with focal points African Commission on Agricultural Statistics

Coordinating Working Party of Fishery Statistics • FAO Statutory Body under Article VI • Established in 1959 and modified to become global coordination mechanism in 1995 • TORs: • keep continuous review the requirements for fishery statistics (including aquaculture) for the purposes of research, policy-making and management • agree standard concepts, definitions, classifications and methodologies • make proposals and recommendations for action to coordinate activities so as to avoid duplication • Members: International and Regional organizations who have relevance in fishery and aquaculture statistics • CCAMLR, CCSBT, FAO, GFCM, IOTC, IATTC, ICCAT, ICES, IWC, NACA, NASCO, NEAFC, NAFO, OECD, SPC, SEAFDEC, SEAFO, Eurostat, WCPFC • New: Aquaculture Group and Capture Fishery Group • New: Revising and updating Handbooks African Commission on Agricultural Statistics

Capacity building Strategy for Improving Information on Status and Trends of Capture Fisheries (Strategy-STF) Strategy for Improving Information on Status and Trends of Aquaculture (Strategy-STA) • Two sub-Regional Workshop: • West Central Gulf of Guinea Region in collaboration with the newly established Fisheries Committee West Central Gulf of Guinea (Accra, Ghana from 26 to 28 June 2007) • The Gulf of Guinea in collaboration with the Fisheries Committee for the Gulf of Guinea (Douala, Cameroon 15-18 April, 2008). • Follow-up national activities: Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, training in Tanzania and Kenya • Other support: • Ad hoc working group on fisheries statistics for the Fisheries Committee West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) • The second meeting of the Working Party on Fisheries Statistics (WPFS) of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) during 28-30 April 2008 in Mombassa, Kenya. • The implementation of Big Numbers Project (FAO/WorldFish Center) African Commission on Agricultural Statistics

Topic: World Custom Organization HS • Objectives of proposal for fishery: • Improved monitoring consumption and utilization of fish and fishery products. • Improved monitoring capacity of capture and aquaculture production • Inputs to socio-economic analysis. • Major points of proposed modifications: • Separation of capture and aquaculture origins for salmons and shrimps • Inclusion of fish used as seeds for culture, e.g. fry and eggs • Addition of several small pelagics, e.g. jack and horse mackerel, anchovies • Addition of new important fresh water species, e.g. Tilapias, Nile perch, catfish, carps • Addition of vulnerable components, e.g. shark fins, toothfish African Commission on Agricultural Statistics
