  2. Forest Resources Many products are made from the flowers, fruits, seeds, and other parts of forest plants. Products can come from both living trees and from cutting trees down. ex: Maple syrup, rubber, and nuts come from living trees and lumber and pulp for paper come from trees that had to be cut down

  3. Managing Forests Because new trees can be planted to replace trees that are cut down, forests can be renewable resources

  4. Logging Methods • Clear cutting is the process of cutting down all trees in an area at once • Selective cutting is the process of cutting down only some trees in a forest and leaving a mix of tree sizes and species

  5. Clear Cutting Clear cutting is quicker, cheaper, and safer for the workers than selective cutting. Clear cutting exposes the soil to wind and rain which makes it easier to be washed out or blown away.

  6. Selective Cutting Selective cutting requires the loggers to move the heavy equipment and logs around the remaining trees in a forest. Selective cutting is less damaging to the environment than clear cutting.

  7. Sustainable Forestry • a sustainable yield is a regular amount of renewable resource such as trees that can be harvested reducing the future supply • with this method, when you take a tree, you plant a new tree

  8. Certified Wood • Forests that are managed in a sustainable way can be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council • Forests that are certified can carry a “well managed” label which allows individuals to select wood from forests that are managed for sustainable yields

  9. How we are impacted by trees Trees and other plants produce oxygen that other organisms need to survive. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and pollutants from the air. Trees prevent flooding and control soil erosion.
