What is a Rational Number? • A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction.
Rules to Add and Subtract Rational Numbers • Addition: • If the numbers have the same sign: • Ignore the signs of the numbers • Add the unsigned numbers together • Include the original sign of the numbers to the answer • If the numbers have different signs: • Ignore the signs of the numbers • Subtract the smaller number from the larger one • Include the original sign of the LARGER number to the answer
Rules to Add and Subtract Rational Numbers Continued… • Subtraction: • Turn your subtraction into addition as follows: • Change the operation sign from subtraction to addition • AND change the sign of the second number at the same time • Follow the rules for addition
Examples • (-8) + (-5) • 9 + (-4) + 3 • -5 + (-8) + 5 • 5 – 12 • -1 – (-5) • (-6) – (-4) • -6 – 6 • 9 – (-2) - 8
