  1. Lesson 2.2- Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers, pg. 73 Objective: To add and subtract integers and rational numbers.

  2. Vocabulary • Rational number: the set of numbers expressed in the form of a fraction a/b, where b ≠ 0. • Opposite: every positive rational number and its negative pair. Ex. 5 and -5 • Additive inverses: a number and its opposite are additive inverses of each other. Ex. -12 + 12 = 0

  3. Addition of Rational Numbers • When adding integers with….. - SAME SIGNS: ADD and KEEP the sign Pos. + Pos. = Pos. Neg. + Neg. = Neg. -DIFFERENT SIGNS: SUBTRACT and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

  4. 8 + (-5) 3 6 + (-14) -8 -1 + (-4) -5 4. Ex. 1: Add Rational Numbers

  5. Subtraction of Rational Numbers • To subtract a rational number, ADD it additive inverse….. a – b = a + (-b) Ex. 8 – 15 = 8 + (-15) = -7

  6. 18 – 23 18 + (-23) -5 12.7 – (-18.4) 12.7 + (+18.4) 31.1 (-3.86) – 1.75 (-3.86) + (-1.75) -5.61 -32.25 – (-42.5) -32.25 + (+42.5) 10.25 Ex. 2: Find each difference.
