Adjectives in Spanish Los adjetivos en español
Adjectives are like mirrors: they reflect the gender and number of the noun they modify. Adjective = Noun in form
Nouns have gender and number in Spanish and so the adjective must reflect the same gender and number as its noun. El chico simpático or Lachica simpática
or Los chicos simpáticos or Las chicas simpáticas
Regular adjectives--those that end in o--change to the feminine by dropping the -o and adding -a; they then change to the plural by adding -s to either form: Feminine: Masculine: alto alt a Singular: s s alto alta Plural:
Most irregular adjectives--those that end in a letter other than o--only change the ending to indicate plurals. If the adjective ends in a consonant, the plural form adds -es. Masculine: Feminine: fácil fácil Singular es fácil es fácil Plural
Adjectives that end in -or add -a to form the feminine: El estudiante trabajador La estudiante trabajadora Adjectives that end in -z change the -z to -c and then add -es to form the plural: La estudiante feliz El estudiante feliz Las estudiantes felices Los estudiantes felices
If more than one adjective modifies and follows a noun , you may connect them with the conjunction -y: Una muchacha simpáticay rápida or Un muchacho bajo y ágil
Descriptions • The formula to answer the previous question would be: Subject pronoun + ser + description word(s) Ex: Yo soy baja y simpatica. *remember to always answer the question first in a yes/no question!
Descriptions • To make a negative statement about yourself, all you have to do is place the word “no” before the verb ser in the sentence. • For example, if you want to say “I am not tall” you would say: Yo no soy alta. • You may also see sentences where the subject pronoun is dropped. This is okay to do once you feel more comfortable with using the verb. Ex: Soy alto- I am tall (the yo is dropped)
