  1. Banner 9 Training WELCOME!

  2. Banner 9 Training Introductions Agenda Features overview Tips & Tricks Quick Housekeeping Slide deck – static images Time at end for your questions, and perhaps we can use a live connection for demo Slide deck will be published to the Banner 9 upgrade site

  3. Why Banner 9? UM pays Ellucian for support. Banner 8 is no longer supported by Ellucian. $$$$ Banner 8 has Java and IE dependencies IE will stop being supported as early as Jan 2020

  4. Terminology Changes “Banner speak” changing to “web page speak”

  5. Banner 9 Feature #1 After typing just three characters you’ll get a list of possible matches. The search works on both the name of the page (“form”) or on the plain English description of it. Searchable page names!

  6. Banner 9 Feature #2 The advanced filter is available wherever you see an ellipsis. For dates, use before or after For numbers, use > or < More search operators!

  7. Banner 9 Feature #2 (cont’d) If you’ve cast too-wide a net, you can continue to refine your filter by clicking on the Filter Again button (near top right). You can also toggle between basic and advanced filtering by clicking on the Filter Again button.

  8. A word of caution about filters The LIKE operator behaves the same as EQUALS. A search for “Last Name” like “Peters” will only return records where the last name is Peters. It will not return Peterson, Petersen, or McPeters Develop the habit of using CONTAINS instead A search for “Last Name” contains “Peters” will return Peterson, Petersen, or McPeters Person search is now case insensitive by default. Other searches are not (fund descriptions or high schools, for instance). Consider omitting the first character. For instance, instead of “Peters”, search for “eters”. If the thing you are searching for is in all caps, you’ll need to try “ETERS”.

  9. Banner 9 Feature #3 Re-order, Re-size, Re-sort columns!

  10. Banner 9 Feature #3 (cont’d) Column reordering or resorting or resizing is not “sticky”. If you leave the form, you’ll need to re-edit upon the next time. Useful for setting up for data entry or for making a screenshot. It even works in filtering! It doesn’t work for every column, but it works for more than you might expect.

  11. Banner 9 Feature #4 These were hidden in menus in Banner 8 but are now visible without any clicks. Activity Date & User info is now visible at bottom of page (So is the database location of a field)

  12. Banner 9 Feature recap Searchable page names More Search Operators Re-size, Re-order, Re-sort columns User and activity date display, and database location info Any questions?

  13. Did you know?: keystrokes https://www.umt.edu/it/projects/Banner9Upgrade Scroll down to item #3 Robust list from Ellucian with EVERY keystroke Mini-cheat sheet: customizable/printable keyboard template

  14. Did you know?: wildcards Improve your search by using wildcards Underscore (_) – replaces any single character (non-null) Percent Sign (%) - replaces any combination of characters or spaces (or nulls) Can find Acting or Accounting or both, depending on how you search

  15. Did you know?: entering dates Banner 8 required this date format: DD-MON-YYYY. This doesn’t work in Banner 9. Now use mmddyy, like most other date fields on the internet. Or you can use the calendar icon and pick a date. Or you can simply type a letter to get today’s date to default in. Caution: in Banner 8 you could use the space bar to clear out a date in a date field but in Banner 9 this doesn’t work. Use backspace or delete instead.

  16. Did you know?: menus “Unified Menu” appears on left Hamburger button exposes the descriptions for the other menu icons Or you can simply hover over the icons Expanded menu on left = lost real estate on the right Home icon gets you back to the Welcome screen Waffle is for Applications, and “My Banner” and Banner Self-Service (Cyberbear) Remaining icons: Search, Recently Opened, Help, and Sign Out.

  17. Did you know?: menus Once you are in a page (and selected a specific record) new menus appear at top right: Related menu offers other pages you may wish to view. If you click on any, you don’t really leave the page you were in to start with, so you’ll have to exit from each page. (Retrace your steps.) Tools menu may include printing, exporting, page layout options, and an alternate way to navigate the tabs within a page. *Add and Retrieve will be grayed out always, because we don’t own Banner Document Management.

  18. Did you know?: personal menu “My Banner” menu: add Banner pages to a personal menu GUAPMNU In Banner 9, this is available via Applications > My Banner ** U forms are changing to S pages (student module) **J forms are changing to F pages (finance module) Banner 9 Instructions available: https://www.umt.edu/it/projects/Banner9Upgrade/FAQ.php

  19. Did you know?: personal links You can add links to external websites, too. For instance, I’ve added a link to Banner Support and to the Ellucian HUB When you click on a link it will open in a new browser tab

  20. Did you know?: browser tips Browser cached data sometimes causes problems To clear your cache, use shift + control + delete Or avoid the issues by using an “in private” or “incognito” browsing window Banner 9 will just look like a browser in your system tray Pick a browser for Banner use specifically so you always know where to find it Duplicate your browser tab (right click on tab; duplicate) You can have multiple sessions of Banner (up to 3) Be sure to exit from a Banner window ASAP if you have more than one open Use SIGN OUT icon to exit from ALL Banner sessions

  21. Did you know?: resources www.umt.edu/bannersupport Follow link to Banner 9 Web Page, under the Banner 9 Upgrade heading, to get more content The Getting Started button will get you to module-specific information and keystroke info The FAQ button will get you to questions that others have asked about If you encounter a problem, please use the Report a Problem link on the left
