What is Health • Health- is the combination of physical,mental/emotional, and social well being.

Wellness • Wellness- overall state of well being, or total health. • Achieving wellness requires an ongoing, lifelong commitment To physical, mental, and social health. “Wellness is based on making sound health decisions and practicing healthy behaviors.”
Promoting Health • Lifestyle factors, or the way a person lives effects health, happiness, and longevity of life. • Longevity- refers to how long a person lives.
10 Guidelines to promote longevity of life. Getting 8-10hrs of sleep per night. Eat breakfast Eat nutritional foods Physically active for 30 minutes 3x per week. Maintaining a healthy weight.

Wellness/Prevention • Prevention- is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. • Health Education- the providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices.
Healthy People 2010 • Healthy people 2010- is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention for improving the health of all people in the United States. Healthy People 2010 • Goals of HP2010 include: increase the quality of life and remove health differences that result in factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location. • Individuals, families, and communities.
Health Literacy • Health Literacy- refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness.

Culture • Culture- refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. • Attitude- The way that you view a situation, your attitude greatly affects the choices you make. • Media- the various methods of communicating information. • Technology- impacts the health status of individuals, families, communities, and the world.

Your Behavior and reducing Health Risks You’ll Learn to: • Describe ways to promote health and reduce risks. • Associate risk-taking with consequences. • Analyze the importance of abstinence from sexual activity as the preferred choice of behavior in a relationship to all sexual activity for un married persons of school age. • Communicate the importance of practicing abstinence. Health Risks • Risk Behaviors- are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. • Cumulative Risks- are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. • Repeated over time • More behaviors involved= more increased risks
Abstaining from Risk Behaviors • Abstinence- avoiding harmful behaviors including tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and sexual activity.
Teens who abstain from sexual activity…. • Never worry about pregnancy • Caring for a child • STD’s • Are free from emotional problems such as guilt, regret, and rejection.
