Ottoman Empire • Named for Osman (turkish leader, military victory in 1301) • Sufis – Members of religious orders, often practicing mystic and ecstatic rituals • Moved population from 12 – 13 million 1520 – 30 to 17 – 18 million in 1580 to 30 35 million in 1600 • Janissaries – slaves captured or bought from conquered populations • Defeated ShiaSafavid empire in Persia • 1527 slave infantry numbered 28,000 • At its height in 1600’s began to decline in 1700’s

  3. India: Mughal Empire • A mixture of Mongol and Turkish people • Began decline after Aurangzebs extended military campaigned • Invaded India in 1526 • In 1568 after a siege which decimated in entire population of 30,000 • Not very much Immigration to Mughal empire

  5. Gunpowder Empires Ottoman Empire Had gunpowder so they were able to attack and conquer the western balkans, constantinople. Defeated ShiaSafavid in Persia. Safavid Empire Shah Abbas who built up military capacity of the country by importing European weapons, equipment, technicians, and Advisers. He acquired guns and artillery that were capable of matching the Ottomans. Mughal Empire Conquered Delhi and Agra with the use of guns. Population 110 million people which is twice that of the Ottoman empire.
