The Rest of Europe • Italy is struggling
North America Prospers! • The Cold War caused the US to stop its isolation policy. They used their economic and military might to protect the free world • US/Canada has conflict over industrial pollution
Soviet Union • Krushchev called for peaceful coexistence with the West but used Soviet troops to crush rebellion in Hungary. Increased tension with nuclear buildup • Brezhnev persued détente’ but felt Soviets should be involved in policing Communists states
Soviets continued… • Gorbechev’s goal was reform of politics and economics, end of the Cold War alnd implementing glasnost(openess) and perstroika.(reforming bureaucracy and reducing size of government)
Domination of Eastern Europe • Soviet Union kept its armies in Eastern Europe and backed local Communists. Once in power, these communitst destroyed rival parties, silenced critics, and established governments subservient to the USSR. • Chechnya-USSR comes in, but division is seem among the USSR army/govt.
Final Breakup of the USSR • Tito in Yugoslavia, gained partial independence • Solidarity union in Poland with Lech Walesa* as its leader defied the Kremlin • Berlin Wall torn down, US shows world its status during Desert storm
Eastern Europe joins NATO • Czechoslovakia peacefully splits between the Czech Republic and Slovakia • See Upclose, page 454
