  3.  Beginning of ITMA • 1st meeting of ItalianTraffic Medicine Association attended by professionals from 11 countries • Conference chair invited foreign guests to lunch on 10 December 1960, where he proposed creating an international organization * So we are now celebrating 50th birthday just 5 months late • Those present agreed to form such an organization, selected board members, and planned inaugural meeting • The new organization was named the International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine (IAATM)

  4.  Early orientation and activities • Earliest pioneers in what was called traffic medicine were mainly physicians • From its founding, IAATM's focus included  preventing crashes  reducing deaths and injuries when they occur • Involvement with WHO • Many disciplines were involved but majority of members were from the medical profession • Inaugural meeting in Rome in 1963 – became called first World Congress

  9. In 2000 renamed: International Traffic Medicine Association ITMA Logo adopted in 1975 Logo adopted in 2000 Created by Dr. Rune Andréasson together with Prof. Georges Hoffmann and Prof. Keith A. Mant Created by Dr. Leonard Evans Name, 1960 – 2000: International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine IAATM International Association for Accident and Traffic Medicine IAATM The word accident became increasingly unacceptable in professional use. Reasons are compelling – words are important – they influence how we think. So in 2000 organization acquired a shorter pronounceable name, ITMA – not containing the unacceptable word.
