  2. Tip #1 • Begin at the very start of each class period and work until the bell rings. • Be efficient with taking attendance. • Implement warm-ups, do-nows, bell work, starter activities • Exit slips

  3. Tip #2 • Be consistent with routines and expectations • Use the “Say, See, Do” method of modeling expected behaviors • Clearly and consistently communicate consequences

  4. Tip #3 • Break the class period into different activities. • Be sure each activity segues smoothly into the next (smooth transitions) • Block schedules: 30-30-30 rule • Remember your P-LA-N!

  5. Tip #4 • Keep all students actively involved throughout the entire class period. • Encourage active listeners, questioners, participants and learners. • Index cards, sticks of fate • Don’t talk too much. • Use the first 15 minutes of class for lectures or presentations, then get the kids actively engaged. • Use student names often.

  6. Tip #5 • Hold students accountable for their learning • Encourage students to become active learners • Student participation ideas • Use stamps, stickers, check marks, etc. to validate participation and quickly check for understanding • Assign some sort of work product each day

  7. Tip #6 • Ensure good communication • Contact parents/caregivers • Early and often • Make first contact positive • When communicating a concern, be specific and descriptive. “I am concerned that you haven’t been turning in your homework. Is there something I can do to help you with your homework assignments?” -

  8. Tip #7 • If a confrontation arises, use the following diffusers: • I understand • I’m sorry • Probably so • Nevertheless • I am concerned

  9. Tip #8 • Discipline individual students quietly and privately. Never engage in a disciplinary conversation across the room.

  10. Tip #9 • Keep your sense of perspective and your sense of humor.
