When did it come around? • The origin of video games lies in early cathode ray tube-based missile defense systems in the late 1940s. • They made more with them in the 1950s • Video gaming started becoming a part of everyday activity in the 1970s, and several large-brand consoles and games eventually became household names.

  3. Cont… • in 1949, a young engineer named Ralph Baer, was given an assignmentto build a television set. • in 1966 with the help of bob tremblay and bob Solomon they areready to demonstrate a system that allows spots to be moved aroundon a TV screen.

  4. Games • The first commercially viable video game was Computer Space in 1971 • In September 1971, the Galaxy Game was installed at a student union at Stanford University.

  5. Video Games • The Magnavox Odyssey is the first home video game console, predating the Atari PONG home consoles by three years. • The Odyssey was released in May 1972

Time lines • 1958 - creation of "Ping pong" tennis on an oscilloscope screen by William Higinbotham at Brookhaven National Laboratory. • 1983 - Nintendo release their first computer, and Mario is released at the same time. • 1989 - First hand held machine from Nintendo, called "Game Boy". Tetris is produced for the Game Boy in Russia.
