Know your staff Liz McGettigan Information Development Manager East Renfrewshire Council NOF Training
Why am I here ? • I wrote an approved plan • I was on the expert panel assessing other Scottish plans • This apparently According to Rhona anyway makes me fairly unique as I have been on both ends of the process • More importantly I am currently implementing this training plan and I would like to share my experiences NOF Training
Get a feel for the plan first I had the guidelines but it was all very new and confusing to me. Tips • Listen and talk to your staff • Get a feel for their learning preferences • Understand their insecurities and lack of confidence • Think basics • Aim for an achievable standard for all staff • Prioritise how you will support their training NOF Training
Starting points • Start from envisioning a standard you would like to see your staff achieve • ECDL is most commonly adopted standard • ECDL also translates very simply into a standard that library staff can pass on to the public based on their own experiences NOF Training
Do your homework • Choose a training provider you are comfortable with as your staff are also likely to be – ask around! • Speak to colleagues in other authorities who have started implementation • Think carefully how you will staff or support the staff and their training • Administration of the training alone can’t be underestimated. NOF Training
Where do you want to be? • Ready for People’s Network roll out in…. • Right staff ready at the right time. Too early is as bad as too late • How many will I need? • What libraries will I want them to be in? • What will I want them to do? NOF Training
How do I get there? • Think ahead –allow some serious thinking time • Visit and phone other authorities and colleagues- don’t reinvent the wheel • Ask what works • Ask what people would change if they could go back and do it all again • Study exemplar plans by all means, but think about your staff and plan for individuals NOF Training
Our plan- best points • ECDL as standard plus contextual roles • Sufficient Educators and Net Navigators– Main roles and meet public needs • Appointment of TSO Training Support Officer to give staff comfort confidence factor • TSO library staff knowledge of shift patterns, relief, one of us feeling NOF Training
Our plan - ideas … • Sell it to the staff tell them how much more marketable they will be ! • Keep them briefed - ask their ideas • Set up a forum so they can talk about and share their training issues and of course -complain about us to each other • E-mail hub • Demonstrate quality in materials administration and support • Bring in external speakers for briefings so they understand the big picture NOF Training
Food for thought… • Carry out TNA • Be practical and simple! • Can you cope with that number of staff involved heavily in training at one time? • Enough Educators and net Navigators? • Is your match funding spend clear? NOF Training
and more food…. • Understand different learning styles and levels of support • Ensure practice time • Dummy tests • How will you monitor and evaluate training? • How will you be able to sustain the training after NOF funding • How will you manage the administration of the project? • Use TNA at the end of training to monitor improvements NOF Training
Right person • Familiar to all staff • Excellent administration skills • Recent knowledge of staffing issues, relief and how libraries work • Experience in our new learning centre • Understanding of public needs in ICT • Understanding of what staff need to know to satisfy this need NOF Training
Our TSO- AP2 • Produced individual training packs and monitoring systems • Liaison with training providers • Liaison with other learning partners • Liaison with the public and community groups • Within weeks produced the following briefing for staff NOF Training
Aims of Your Training • To learn new skills • To be better at your job • To keep up to date • To be prepared for change NOF Training
Outcomes of Your Training • You will be more confident • You will be well- motivated • You will have a higher level of morale • You will have more skills to pass on to customers NOF Training
