Continuing Hostility • After several wars, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat did the unthinkable • No Arab country had recognized Israel’s right to exist. Sadat was willing to do this • In exchange for peace, Sadat asked Israel to recognize the rights of the Palestinians AND withdraw from captured Egyptian, Syrian, and Jordanian territory • Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Sadat met in Maryland with President Jimmy Carter to negotiate • The Result….The Camp David Accords
All Was Still Not Peaceful • The Palestinians however continued to fight the Israeli’s. • The Israeli’s occupied the West Bank and Gaza, land they said was Palestinian • AN organization called the PLO fought the Israeli’s • PLO headed by Yasir Arafat. Many considered this group a terrorist organization • Violence against Israel by the PLO lasted from 1970’s in to late ’80’s
The Oslo Peace Accords • The World had had enough! • Talks were held in Oslo, Norway • The Declaration of Principles was created • Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin granted Palestinians self rule in occupied territory • Many Israeli’s were angered with Rabin
Almost Peace • With Rabin’s death and the new hard line Israeli government elected, peace was slipping away.
