  1. Biology: The Study of Life! Word Comparison Both Mitosis and Meiosis are types of cell division. But how are they different? Mitosis is cell division that produces a cell identical to the original cell. This is the type of cell division that occurs in regular organism body cells. If you cut your fingernails then it is mitosis that produces new nails. Meiosis is cell division of specialized cells that produce 4 new cells each with only half the original amount of DNA.
