  3. Physical Geography • Andes mountain range splits into cordillera • East of the Andes (Llanos) • Amazon rainforest extends into the region. • Orinoco river – one of the largest in South America! (1,330 mi) • Climate? • Hint: Think of its location near the equator

  6. Physical Geography • Andes (hold what distinction?) • Pampas – fertile grasslands (250,000 square miles!) • Patagonia – region in southern Argentina and Chile • Altiplano – rich in metals for mining (silver, zinc, etc…)

  7. How were the Andes formed? • Subduction • Nazca plate and South American plate – took 80 million years! • Negative impact?
