The Great Depression Standard 5.3
Prior to the Great Depression • Many South Carolinians already living in poverty. • Stock market crashes in 1929 and further hurts the economy. This is, however, not the cause of the Great Depression.
Result of the Great Depression • Textile mills close; people lose jobs. • Many lose life savings due to banks closing. • Many lose homes and farms. • 25 % of South Carolinians were unemployed during the Great Depression.
A new president and a New Deal • In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected as president.
New Deal • President Roosevelt wanted to help Americans • He and Congress worked together to create jobs to help the unemployed. • This was called the New Deal. • This would also provide a boost to the economy.
CCC • The Civilian Conservation Corps, or the CCC, was one of the programs put into place by the New Deal • This provided employment to young men by hiring them to do outdoor projects. • They planted crops, built state parks, built roads, bridges, and dams. • The CCC was racially segregated as well. • Whites were given priority over blacks to be hired.
New Deal Programs • These programs were geared to not only provide employment, but to relieve pressure on the economy. • When workers got paid, they spent their money in stores, which helped store owners. • Grocers and store keepers would buy more goods, so this helped the people that made the goods. • The New Deal did not end the Great Depression.
