  1. Before we begin… • Create your city • You must have the following • One 1” river that goes either North to South or East to West • One wooden bridge that crosses the river • 4 roads leading to the bridge • You may include a coastline on one or 2 sides of your town

  2. Round 1 - 1750 It is now 1750. At this time in America, most people lived in small cities near the coast. An enterprising young capitalist group (you guys) decides to invest money in a small shipping industry. The profits are astounding! People all around the area go through your company when shipping goods to Europe. Since you invested your money, you made a tidy profit, Build yourself 1 nice home anywhere on the map you would like it to be.

  3. Round 2 - 1800 It is now 1800. Several businesses (Whaling, Logging, Mining… etc) in the NE have allowed for the slow growth of your coastal city. Add 5 houses.

  4. Round 3 - 1820 It is 1820. The people of your village need a bit more food and goods to meet the needs of the new inhabitants. Coincidentally, a number of other noteworthy events occur around 1820. First, a number of new mechanical inventions for farms are developed. The invention of the steam plow and reaper machines have allowed farmers to increase the amount of food they produce. Also, Henry Clay’s American System has increased inter state trade around the U.S. -Add 5 more houses -Add one North and South Road -Add one North to south Railroad -Add one Canal connecting to your river to Either the North or South

  5. Round 4 - 1830 It is now 1830. As a result of the industrial revolution and the invention of the cotton gin, the amount of raw materials coming from the south has skyrocketed. Also, due to the “tariff of 1828” the South is forced to buy goods created in the north, bringing even more money to your town Add 1 factory.  Remember, the textile factory must be placed on the river bank.  Don’t add any smoke to this factory!!  Add 5 houses for workers.

  6. Round 5 - 1835 It is now 1835, additional workers are needed to work in this new factory. Machines have taken the place of people on the farms and has forced people to move to your town that is now becoming a city. Add  5  houses, 1  church , 1  pub, &  1  store.  You may draw additional roads and 1 additional bridge. 

  7. Round 6 - 1840 The profits from the first textile factory are enormous. New businessmen from Europe are investing in industries around your city. Add 5 new factories (must be on the river bank as they need water power).  Add 5 houses

  8. Round 7 - 1845 It is 1845.Unemployed workers from surrounding areas flood into your community looking for work. Although wages are low, they look attractive to starving families. Housing is in great demand and for the first time, a new kind of housing is constructed called tenements. Here, dozens of families reside under one roof. Add 5 Tenements.

  9. Round 8 - 1850 It is now 1850. More workers need to live, eat, shop, drink, and worship. In addition, the very wealthy attended school. Since workers work six days a week, the only day of rest was Sunday. Add 1 store, 1 pub, and 1 church.  Also add 1 school.

  10. Round 9 - 1855 Now, it's 1782. Workers work long, hard hours in the factories. The average work day begins at 6:00am and ends at 9:00 pm. There is only a 30 minute break for lunch. After work, exhausted, stressed out, workers stop at their favorite pub for refreshment and relaxation. Alcohol begins to be consumed in record amounts. Add 2 more pubs. 

  11. Round 10 - 1860 We move on to 1860. The working conditions in the factories continue to worsen. Working conditions in both of these areas were appalling. Many workers contracted the Deadly fever or lung disease. Other workers were injured on the job in factory accidents. There were no protective railings around huge moving machines. Children, weakened from lack of sleep and food, often stumbled into machinery and were ripped to shreds.  Women with long hair that came undone often were caught in machinery. Regardless, if you were unable to work, you were fired. There was no health insurance. There was always a daily line of unemployed workers waiting to fill vacant jobs. Add One hospital, and 1 cemetery.

  12. Round 11 - 1863 • In the midst of the deadliest war in American history, families in your city receive daily notices of additional soldiers from your city who are KIA. In addition, there are several copperheads who have shown their disapproval of the war. Lincoln has ordered these people thrown in prison. • Add 3 more cemeteries, 1 jail

  13. Round 12 - 1866 In 1866, there are no pollution limits or controls on factories and businesses. Windows, walls even trees are covered with layers of soot. The river that once flowed through the quiet village for hundreds of years is now unfit for drinking, bathing or laundry. A new disease begins to take lives of people. Malignant tumors in people begin to grown in large numbers. Black lung is on the rise. The average life expectancy for the poor is now 30 years of age. Your city is overcrowded and shrouded in factory smoke.  The noise, the loss of privacy, loss of family unit, shatters the peace of the old ways. Suicide rates double, then triple. Add 2 more hospitals all to accommodate the victims of urban life….

  14. Round 13 - 1871 The year is now 1871. It has been 2 years since the completions of the Transcontinental railroad. Businessmen in your city are taking advantage of this new and improved method of trade. Add 1 railroad line connecting your factory district to the west

  15. Round 14 - 1875 We move now to 1875.Thanks to earlier innovations such as Edwin Drakes steam drill and the Bessemer Process, the steel and oil industries have rapidly grown into two of the countries most profitable industries. Add 10 factories with smoke.  Add smoke to all other pre-existing factories.  Also, add two nicer Houses as these entrepreneurs gradually increase their fortunes.

  16. Round 15 - 1880 The year is 1880.As industry continues to boom, the need for fuel for trains and factories increases, in the Western portion of your city, coal is discovered which proves to be a valuable resource Add 2 new coal mines and a new steel bridge to replace the old wooden one.  

  17. Round 16 - 1885 Five years after Thomas Alva Edison patented the longer lasting light bulb, your city officials have decided to invest in this new innovation in attempt to increase safety within the city during night hours. Crime has become rampant with the lack of an effective police force. Draw street lights, lining your business community streets.

  18. Round 17 - 1890 In 1890 we continue to see industry flourish. Working conditions, however, are very poor. It is a common theme to see young children working in factors as they could be paid less for the same amount of work. Industrial workers often work over 10 hours per day. Due to these dangerous and terribly Unhealthy work conditions, the likelihood of death or injury is great . Add 1 cemetery and two factories .

  19. Round 18 – 1900 By 1900,new machines continue to take the jobs of worker in the U.S. As this is happening, Millions of immigrants are also moving into northern cities in search of homes and jobs.  Add 10 houses, 10 tenements, 2 stores, 1 church, 5 factories, 1 pub, and another huge, nice house.

  20. Round 19 - 1910 It is 1910,There are some advantages for many of the urban dwellers. City life is quite different from country life. For the small, but growing middle class, a new cultural life is available. Museums, theaters, operas, restaurants, plays, concerts are made available. Before, only the wealthy, elite would attend these events. Add 1 museum, 2 theaters, and 2 private schools, 3 sky scrapers (10-15 stories).

  21. Round 20 - 1919 • Thanks to the progressive movement, workers rights begin to improve. People have more time to participate in leisure activities. The city has also invested in different forms of mass transit to allow people to move around the city. This same year. Alcohol is made illegal. • Build one Baseball park or amusement park , one streetcar route along your Main Street, board up all pubs.

  22. Exit Activity DISCUSSION • What problems did you encounter while building your city? • What problems might occur as a result of this urbanization? • What role did the industrial revolution play in these developments? • If we did this activity again, knowing what you know now, what changes would you make? Why would you make these changes? 5. How do the cities in the western part of the country compare to the cities in the eastern part of the country?
