Open Existing Parts • Click on the second icon in the tool bar and open an existing part.
SolidWorks Stimulation • Click on the Office Product tab and select “SolidWorks Simulation” • This step must be done when editing an existing study or creating a new study. Any existing studies will appear in the lower left corner of the screen • Select the simulation tab and then click on the arrow beneath “Study Advisor”, and click on “New Study”. A new window will prompt on the left side of the screen asking for the type of stress.
Stress Study • Select “Static” and accept with green check mark. • A new study will appear on the left side of the screen. • At this point, you should save the file as a new copy with FEA activated.
Edit material • Right click on the project name and select “Apply/Edit Material” • Choose a suitable material. In this case, use AISI1045 cold drawn steel. • Select English IPS under units • Click on “Apply” and then close the window.
Fixed Geometry • First, rotate the bar so the left end of the step shaft is visible • Click on “Fixtures” in the study panel, and click on the left end of the bar as the fixed geometry. • An image of this step is shown in the next slide.
Loading • Click on “External Loads” in the study panel and select “Force” • Select a loaded face, click on selected direction and click on a vertical edge of the bar to define the direction of the force. • Select “English IPS” under unit and enter a value for the force, in this case, 200 lbf. • Use “Reverse direction” if needed. • Accept with green check mark • For applying torque(second part of the project) click on torque button beneath force, and enter a value for torque, in this case, 158 in*lbf.
Mesh • Right click on Mesh in the study panel and select “Mesh and Run” • A new option “Results” will appear under Mesh. • Right click on “Stress” and select “Edit Definition” • Under Display, select “Von Mises Stress” with unit in “ksi”.
Refine Mesh • To refine mesh, right click on mesh and select “ Create Mesh” • Move the density slider to fine , select “Run the analysis” and accept with green check mark. • The new maximum Von Mises Stress should be 21945.1 psi. • To save your stress plot, click on “ File Save As” in the toolbar and save the file as JPG or TIF.
