Exploring why diversity is important? • Create a safe environment where ideas and exploration can occur • Take time to hear where people are at • Don’t assume people agree • Performance of diverse groups • Creating an environment of respect and acceptance • Explore diversity within your own department
Where to begin? • Establish goals • Individual/Department or both • Do you intend to make this an expectation? • Will the employee be assessed on their development efforts? • Communicate goals • Consistency • Resources • Who will lead effort?
What type of diversity training is needed? • Defining Diversity • Racial, Cultural, Sexual Orientation, Transgender, International, Veterans, Age, Size, Religion, Ability, socio-economic, etc. • Privilege, earned and unearned advantage • Poll staff • Interests, fears, experiences, etc. • Survey students or groups • Others?
What is already in place on campus? • HR, Affirmative Action, Training and Development, Res Life, Student Affairs, ALANA, LGTBQ, Veterans, SGA, clubs and other organizations • Faculty, Staff, Students with interesting experiences or backgrounds • Network with colleagues, interviews • Guest speakers or lectures • Library, media services (recorded lectures, workshops, movies, books or book groups) • Course or workshop offerings • Local agencies
