  2. Background Why primates? Used as a human model for testing before testing on humans What do they test on them? human pathologies and diseases (such as AIDS, Parkinson's disease, etc) psychological disorders (such as depression and anxiety) toxicology Transplantation nutrition (including infant nutrition) dentistry biological warfare and bio-defense drug abuse vaccine and other drug testing, and cloning.

  3. Why concerned? Can cause major side effects, some need to be restrained, found to be cruel/torture because of purposeful infection of a disease which is allowed to progress (diarrhea, dehydrations, etc) leading to death of disease studying Primates are aging at UW

  4. How regulated? There are four federal agencies that regulate the use of animals in research. • Public Health Service (PHS) – regulates care and use of animals and requires committees at each institution • The Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR) – regulates day to day care • USDA’s Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) – must have one inspection per year • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – regulates animal care issues and safety issues the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) independent, non federal organization
