  2. Role of the Council • In the UK, there are different levels local councils. Each of these has responsibility for a particular range of local services. • County • District Which one is Salford? • Salford City Council is the local authority for the city of Salford and as such is the lowest (or 'local') tier of government in this area.

  3. Councillors • A councillor is elected by the local community and is there to represent its views. • To voice any issues with your local councillor, contact them via your local authority or attend an advice surgery. Advice surgeries are available to anyone seeking information and advice, making a complaint or asking about local authority services. When is the next Election? Why is it Significant?

  4. Councillors • Salford City Council comprises 20 electoral wards with three councillors representing each ward. • The city council is controlled by the Labour party, the political composition of the city council is: • Labour 44 • Conservative 11 • Liberal Democrat 3 • Independent 2

Improving The Quality Of Life • Improving Services and Quality of Life: • Awareness of services can improve take-up (local directories, mailing lists, etc) • Pooled knowledge of users, non-users, providers, etc can lead to improvements • Local devolved budgets can stimulate and sustain local provision • Coming together can improve lives

  11. Community Committees • One for each neighbourhood – 8 in total • Sub-Committee of the Council • Community Representatives • Ward Councillors • Provides a focus for the concerns of local people • Scrutinises local services • Decides on the on the use of local budgets

  12. Exercise • A local park has fallen derelict. It is no longer used by residents and attracts Anti Social Behaviour. A small group of local people would like to do something to turn the park back into a useable space. One local Councillor has said they would support local people taking more ownership in the park. Others are not sure. What would you do?
