What is the Green Economy? • There is no specific industry designated as “green”. Green jobs are found in virtually all industries. The difference is in the number and ratio of green jobs to non-green jobs that vary within each industry and business sector. • One definition that is widely used is: The green economy encompasses the economic activity related to reducing the use of fossil fuels, decreasing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the efficiency of energy usage, recycling materials, and developing and adopting renewable sources of energy.
What is a Green Job? • No common definition of a green job • Green jobs provide products and services that use renewable energy resources, reduce pollution, conserve energy and natural resources and reconstitute waste. (White House Task Force on the Middle Class). • According to DOL O*NET Study, a better approach to defining green occupations may be to define the “greening of occupations”
Green Increased Demand Occupations • Green economy activities and technologies are likely to increase the employment demand but will not lead to significant changes in the work or worker requirements.

Green Enhanced Skills Occupations 2. The essential purposes of the occupation remain the same, but the skill sets, methods, occupational profile, and credentials have been altered.

Developing Green Programs • Identify needs and opportunities at the state, regional and local levels. • Identify the careers being targeted within career field pathways. • In partnership with postsecondary institutions create pathways that open numerous opportunities for students. • Engage business and keep in mind industry certificates that will influence program design and delivery. • Build the program on industry recognized content standards. • Promote accomplishments.

Office of CTE-ODE • Content standards documents will identify knowledge and skills associated with green industry sectors. • Highlight green focused careers within each of the state career fields. • Engage and partner with the business community. • Continuously examine and promote related industry credentials that may be attained through a secondary-postsecondary educational pathway. • Record development processes and identify best practices such that systems may be replicated. • Provide ongoing and targeted professional development.
