HISTORY J. Paul Getty viewed art as a civilizing influence in society, and strongly believed in making art available to the public for its education and enjoyment. He founded the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1953.

The Getty Center, a dramatic hill-top campus in Los Angeles, opened in 1997. Architect Richard Meier sought to design the complex so that it highlights both nature and culture.

An Allegory of Passion The panel's patron was probably a scholar and a humanist Swiss, 1530Oil on panel The painting has a rich history of ownership. On the back of the panel is the monogram HP, which stands for Henry, Prince of Wales, the older brother of Charles I and one of the first serious art collectors in England.

Pair of Coffers on Stands H: 5 ft. 1 5/8 in. x W: 5 ft. 1 1/2 in. French, Paris, about 1680 - 1685Intended to hold jewels or small precious items, the interiors of this pair of coffers are lined with tortoiseshell and brass or pewter, with secret compartments in the base.
Commode(Literally meaning "convenient" in French.) H: 2 ft. 9 3/4 in.; W: 4 ft. 3 3/4 in.; D: 1 ft. 11 in. French, Paris, about 1710 - 1715The swelled concave and convex form is fairly typical for the early 1700s.
The Getty Museum A Legacy for Generations To Come.
You can visit the Getty Center at its dramatic hilltop site in the Santa Monica Mountains, just off the San Diego Freeway. Admission to the museum is free to the public on weekends, and weekdays after 4 P.M. Parking is $5 cash per car, with unlimited people in the car. Closed on Mondays and major holidays.
