Geography of Ancient Egypt • Nile River is the longest in the world • It begins in the heart of Africa and runs north to the Mediterranean. • The northern part of Nile River Valley is called Lower Egypt and the southern part is called Upper Egypt. Map NEXT

The Gift of the Nile • Egyptian’s worship Nile as a god • Predictable annual floods bring water and fertile black mud (loess) • The surplus of food Egyptian farmers could grow in this fertile soil made Egypt prosperous. • The Nile also served as a great highway that enhanced transportation and communication. Builders of the Pyramids • Egyptians believed that a person’s spiritual body (ka) could survive the death of the physical body if the physical body were properly preserved through mummification. • Pharaohs built elaborate tombs, pyramids, to meet their needs after death • They contained food, weapons, artwork, and household goods for the person in the afterlife.

Pyramid Facts Pyramid is constructed of approx. 2.3 million square blocks each weighing between 2 and 30 tons. Total pyramid weighs about 6.5 million tons. It is approx. 240 feet tall or about 24 stories high It took 20 – 40 years for about 5,000 men to build a pyramid
Cleopatra Facts • New Kingdom Falls to Libyans in 1070 BC • Alexander the Great conquers Eqypt in 332 BC • Cleopatra was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 69 BC • She was the daughter of Pharaoh Ptolemy XII • Ruled as regent Pharaoh for nearly 30 years • Well-educated and intelligent, a good ruler • Defeated by Rome in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC
