  2. The Election of 1960: JFK defeats Richard Nixon • First election where television had widespread use as a tool for campaigns to reach voters. Candidates became “packaged products.” • Kennedy’s Catholicism was a large issue. Brought up the debate about the relationship between church and state. • One of the closest elections in history.

  3. Discussion Question: Do you think television is good or bad for Presidential elections? Why/why not? The Kennedy Mystique – Kennedy was popular because of his youth, energy, and optimism. This made him a very appealing figure.

  4. The issues: Both JFK and Nixon campaigned as Cold Warriors. Let’s read JFK’s inaugural address and see if we can find some connections with some of the things we’ve been talking about in class.

  5. “The New Frontier” – JFK’s domestic agenda FDR (Democrat) = New Deal ---- What was that all about? Truman (Democrat) = The Fair Deal --- What was that all about? Eisenhower (Republican) = Dynamic Conservatism --- What was that all about? JFK (Democrat) = The New Frontier: Increase aid to education Provide health insurance to elderly Deficit Spending - Invest money in defense industries to boost economic growth Cut taxes (supply side economics) Raise minimum wage Provide money to poor areas and build low income housing

  6. The Decisions of the Warren Court Earl Warren Review: What are the three branches of government and what purpose do they serve? In class, let’s take a look at the chart in the textbook on page 844. Let’s say you’re a historian who is writing a book about the Warren Court. Almost all books written by historians have introductions in them. You need to write the first paragraph of the introduction of your book.

  10. John Glenn – First man to orbit the earth - February 1962

  11. Let’s listen to this super cool tape recording of JFK debating one of his NASA scientists and see what we can take away from it.

  12. The Death of a President November 22nd, 1963 – JFK and LBJ head to Dallas Texas for political appearances.

  13. Lee Harvey Oswald – Man accused of killing Kennedy. He was murdered by Jack Ruby.

  14. View from where Lee Harvey Oswald supposedly took to the shot. The Warren Commission – group headed by Chief Justice Warren to investigate assassination. Determined Oswald acted on his own, closed the books on the case.
