Quality, Universally Designed, Affordable, Inclusive Housing in Missouri: SUCCESS STORIES!
DDD HOUSING MISSION To develop quality, affordable, accessible housing for people with disabilities in safe locations where they can access support services, transportation, employment, and recreation throughout their lifespan.
QUALITY HOUSING: HOW DO WE GET THERE? COLLABORATION!
What if the idea of living in a better place actually becomes REALITY?
THE CHALLENGE: How do you design and develop a home for people who have extensive mobility and health needs? THE OUTCOME: 3 homes built to the EXACT specifications needed.
“Green” ICF wall construction was used in which concrete and rebar are permanently encased in insulating Styrofoam walls. This lowers the “carbon footprint” & utility bills!
The concrete and rebar strengthens the structure greatly. Adding on other tornado-resistant construction and a tornado-resistant “Safe Room” was vital for people who use wheelchairs for mobility needs. Enough room for 3 wheelchairs and staff!
Having “Zero thresholds” (no threshold lip to have to get a wheelchair over) made entering and exiting their home a lot easier.
These homes were built with extra large spaces to accommodate extra-large and long wheelchairs.
All floors are made of beautifully polished concrete to enable wheelchairs to roll easily. Halls and doors are extra wide.
“Zero threshold” roll in showers and an extra long tub with room for a Hoyer Lift under the tub were a must.
Lowered cabinets, lowered counters, and room for your feet under all cabinets and appliances made kitchen tasks easier.
Larger bedrooms with plenty of wheelchair turning radius and lowered places to hang and store items make for ease of use.
HOW DID THIS SUCCESS COME ABOUT? • TEAMWORK: • A strong team with community partners of many types including: • The gentlemen moving into the homes and their families • The legally responsible persons • The local Independent Living Center • The Developer/Contractors • Support Coordinators • The Support Providers • Equipment Suppliers • MO Housing • WE INCLUDED ALL THE PEOPLE WHO KNEW • AND CARED ABOUT THE GENTLEMEN.
HOW DID THIS SUCCESS COME ABOUT? • The developer, contractors, and Independent Living Center met all the gentlemen who were going to live in the home personally. They "built to suit" to meet their needs. • We spent MANY, MANY HOURS planning, retooling the plan, communicating, negotiating, networking, thinking “outside the box”… • We were “reality based” and acted with urgency. COLLABORATION IS VITAL!
HOW DID THIS SUCCESS COME ABOUT? FAILURE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT AN OPTION WE CONSIDERED!!
