THE EqUAtORIAL AFRICAN DEPOSITION NETWORK (eadn) NIGERIA STATION PROJECT UPDATE Prof. (Mrs) K. O. Olayinka (Project Coordinator) Department of Chemistry University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos.
EADN Background • The African Great Lakes and other surface water resources are gradually becoming nutrient enriched • These nutrients may be coming from agricultural land, either as direct runoff, or through the atmosphere following biomass burning and wind erosion of exposed soils. • Atmospheric deposition is a major component of the nutrient budgets into these waters. • Some of the direct effects of nutrient enrichment include eutrophication, hypoxia and fish kill.
EADN Background Cont… • GEF International Waters Project on African Great Lakes – indentified the links between increasing eutrophication and atmospheric deposition of macronutrients. • The EADN is a monitoring program within the equatorial region of Africa with about 12 participating countries established • to assess the deposition of nutrients from the atmosphere • to determine its effects on surface water eutrophication and agriculture
EADN Eutrophication
EADN Fishkill
EADN EADN Project Targets • What are the specific rates of atmospheric • deposition • How do they vary in space and time • What are the source areas and control processes • What is the likely impacts on aquatic ecosystems • and agriculture • What are the control measures and best • practices
EADN Installed Atmospheric Sampler
EADN Optimization of the Policy Impact of EADN • Sensitization of policy makers and the media • Raising awareness at state and national levels • meetings • media briefs • demonstration of the science in layman’s language • Identification of target group/beneficiaries (farmers, fishermen, rural and riverine inhabitants) • Translation of the results into economic gains/losses • Presenting information to politician
EADN EADN Project Status in Nigeria • Collection monthly atmospheric deposition • samples since July, 2013. • Analysis of samples in France along with those of • other countries. • Only the atmospheric sampler still installed. • Steering Committee about to be inaugurated to • coordinate the EADN activities in Nigeria. • Members composed of representatives from the • FMENV, Ministries of Water Resources and • Agriculture as well as other stakeholders.
EADN Challenges • Slow deployment of other equipment to the Ibadan Station • Funding for the activities of the Local Steering Committee
