  1. World Turret Design • Team Members: • Matt Buonanno • Owen Brown • Brian Heeran • Eric Newcomb • Steven Paul • Brice Wert • Robert Yarbrough

  2. Project Mission Statement • The mission of the project team is to theoretically develop a design for a simple turret index model. This design shall incorporate a torque motor and be used to evaluate the feasibility of future applications. The team shall conduct an extensive benchmark study as well as perform testing on competitors turrets published data. A feasibility evaluation resulting in design recommendations will be conducted. Upon review the team shall then develop the selected design in preparation for pilot builds.

  3. Concept Development • Main Drive – Torque Motor • Top Plate – 12 Tooling Stations (off shelf) • Coupler – Locks motor and top plate (off shelf) • Piston – Connects top plate to coupler (off shelf) • Housing – Cast iron, interface with x-y axis slides

  4. Preliminary Concepts

  5. Preliminary Concepts Continued

  6. System Model • Torque motor response to step input voltage • Optimized around a single station to station index motion

  7. Concept Evaluation Process • Designs were evaluated based on the following characteristics. • Indexing Time • Static Stiffness/Rigidity • Repeatability • Weight/Volume • Simplicity

  8. Design Concerns • Heat generation and removal • Sealing the motor • Bearings • Static Stiffness • Thermal Deflection • Dynamic response to electrical input

  9. Desired Outcomes • Confirmation of published data using a validated experimental process. • Verify the feasibility of Torque Motor implementation into CNC machines. • Demonstrate competitive advantage through the use of Torque Motor.
