HYDROSPHERE - FRESH WATER EQ – Was the water you drank today once drunk by dinosaurs? Would a dinosaur want to drink our water today?
OBJECTIVES PS9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6 YWBAT: • EXPLAIN THE DISTRIBUTION AND QUALITY OF EARTH’S WATER, • ILLUSTRATE THE THE WATER CYCLE AND IT EXPLAIN ITS RELEVANCE TO THE MOVEMENT OF SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE WATER AND TO WEATHER CONDITIONS, & • EXPLAIN THE CREATION OF A RIVER SYSTEM.
Water Facts • Used by every living thing • Is renewable • Most of resource is in the oceans • Each person uses 400 liters/day ( see page 366) • Industry uses more then 10 billion liters/day • US farmlands use more than 375 billion liters/day for irrigation • Important food source • Easily polluted • Must be purified for safe use
Water Facts (cont.) • An abundant substance • Covers 70 % of the earth’s surface • 97% of water found in oceans • 3% is fresh water - most locked up in ice
THE WATER CYCLE • The water or hydrologic cycle is the continuous movement of water from oceans and freshwater sources to the air, land, and back to the bodies of water which results in fresh water continuously being renewed.
Water Distribution • Watersheds • River systems • Lakes and ponds • Aquifers • Icebergs and glaciers
