Setting Most of the setting takes place on the beautiful coast of California. Without this setting, the book would be a whole different story. The conflict would not take place in the water and Tommy and Bee would not have known the two characters they met along the coast.(Ty and Little Brew) The reason why the setting is important is that the whole story would be a lot different if the setting wasn’t along the coast of California.
Conflict -The conflict of the story was actually Man V.S. Nature. -During the family’s trip to California, Tommy goes surfing with his sister (Bee), Little Brew and Ty. During the surf, it’s Tommy’s turn to go surf in the water for the first time. While he is surfing, he is watched by his sister Bee. Bee then spots Tommy go under the water. He doesn’t come up. She then tells Little Brew and Ty. Bee then calls 911 and then Tommy is in the ambulance heading toward the hospital.
Summary of Plot Just for Tommy, Tommy’s Mom and Bee set up a trip to California so that Tommy can see his favorite animal in the world, sharks!!! During the trip, Mom leaves the hotel and also leaves Tommy and Bee. After a while, Tommy decides to leave the hotel to go see Ty and Little Brew along the coast. When Bee and Tommy get there, they decide that they will go surfing in the morning. When they do, Bee spots Tommy go under the water and not come up. A few minutes later, Tommy is in the hospital. Hours later, Bee finds out that Tommy is alive and well. A day later, the trip is over and Tommy, Bee, and their mom return to the plane to go back home.
Theme -The theme of the story is if one has a dream/wish that they want granted/to achieve, you can also achieve yours no matter what. -On page 30, the quote shows that Tommy has a dream he wants achieved. -On page 133, the quote shows that when Tommy achieves his dream, she notices she has a dream too. -On page 152, Tommy was exited that he accomplished his dream, swimming with sharks!!!
Point of View -The point of view in the story is in first person. This point of view helps me(the reader) understand more clearly what the characters are saying and thinking during the book. If the story was a different point of view, I wouldn’t understand the story as well because I wouldn’t be able to know what the characters are thinking during the book.
Symbolism A shark would probably symbolize Tommy because Tommy has a huge love about sharks, knows all about them, and is very curious about them. If a shark didn’t symbolize Tommy in the story, that means the story would be one whole different story.
Recommendation I do think that this book is worth reading because the events occurring in the story are events that could actually occur in your life. It could help you solve your problems, achieve your goals, and grant wishes that you have in all of you lifetime.
