  4. Thank you Ma’am 8L • 1. After reading Thank you Ma’am, what connections can you make between the author’s life and the story? • 2. What elements of the Harlem Renaissance do you see in the story? • 3. What is the theme of the story? (A sentence not a word) • 4. How does the author’s background influence the theme of the story?

  5. Reading Check #1 • Standards: 3.7, 3.4, 3.2 • Answer in complete sentences. You can use the novel, but make sure you cite your evidence. Example: “Tom and Huck spoke” (Twain, p.32). How does Twain create mood in the novel? • 3. During what time period and where is the novel set? How will the setting influence what happens in the novel? (Think about what was going on during this time) • 4. How does Mark Twain’s background influence the text? Be specific. (3-4 sentences) • 5. What types of conflicts have occurred in the novel so far? Please identify at least 1 external conflict and describe it and 1 internal conflict.
