Status of School Education of Muslim Children in India A presentation prepared for the of National Commission for Minorities by Department of EMIS, NUEPA October 1, 2013
Issues in Data Availability • Collection of data on Muslims under DISE • DISE is collecting data on Enrolment of Muslims in Elementary Education from 2005-06 and also on medium of instruction, number of madrasa schools (recognized and unrecognized) with enrolment • From 2012-13 onwards data enrolment in secondary education is being collected • From this it is possible to examine trends in enrolment, madrasa enrolment as proportion of Muslim enrolment, Muslim enrolment by medium of instruction, dropouts, transition rates, gender parity, etc
Issues in Data Availability • Issues in Quality and consistency of data • The quality and consistency of data needs further improvement. • Calculation of transition rates, dropout rates require more consistent data
Issues in Data Availability Other Sources • The All India Survey of School Education also provides data on Muslims • Enrolment data on Muslims for the year 2002-03 are available from 7th Survey. • The data from 8th survey with reference date September 2009 are yet to be made available • National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) • NSSO also provides data on participation of various religious minorities in education • 61st (2004-05), 64th (2007-08) and 66th (2009-10) rounds of NSS collected data on participation of minorities in education.
