Agenda • 5 major problems • Fundamental problem • Job Distribution • Time line • Reflections • Bibliography
Over dependency on technology • The scenario states that most adults work from home now and they have machinery and robots to lighten or even completely do their housework for them. This over-dependence on technology could cause problems for the users when it suddenly breaks down. They might find themselves unable to do simple things that they used to know, and are not independent. • An experiment conducted by the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology, Oregon Health and Science University, Portland shows that in the medical industry, when there is system unavailability, there is a loss of patient safety due to practice disruption. It also shows that the workers have complete trust in the computerized data, and lastly, it shows that workers cannot work without the normal technology that they are used to.
Communication problems • The scenario states that many families do not eat together anymore, and when students are in school, they use an integrated learning device to learn instead of traditional face-to-face teaching. This may arise in communication problems, where teenagers no longer know how to communicate effectively because there is so little communication involved in their daily lives. When that happens, if they are in need of help, they will not know how to approach anyone. • Bob Affonso from the University of Nevada wrote on his website that there has been increasing reports of students talking less to their families and thus feeling lonely and depressed. However, when they go onto the internet, the problem is still the same because they still do not know how to communicate with people.
No physical activity, health problems • The scenario states that teenagers spend most of their time watching or playing with computerised media systems. This means that they spend a lot of time in the virtual world. This shows that most teenagers regard the usage of such technology as their main form of recreation. This may cause the lack of physical activity, leading to poor physical health. • The use of technology over a long time may have huge impact on the health of teenagers, in terms of eyesight, physical health or the excess radiation. A study in Beijing which shows that over 20% of primary- and secondary-school students were overweight because the teenagers are spending more and more time watching TV and playing video games. Without a change of habits, these children could be facing a lot of health problems, like high blood pressure, liver trouble and diabetes.
Usage of psychoactive drugs • The scenario states that Tom’s preliminary findings indicate that at least 40 per cent of secondary school students are users of psychoactive drugs. Hence, it may arise in the long term usage of these psychoactive drugs. In the long run, these drugs dull the mind and retard our physical and emotional responses, so teenagers who use these drugs become sleepy and sluggish. It can also cause addiction to the drugs when being abused. • This is proven by a report made on psychoactive drug. It says that when a person takes the drug, it is highly rewarding in terms of emotion, leading to addiction. However, when a person tries to get rid of the addiction, there will be withdrawal symptoms, causing reliance to the drug. Together with the side effect, it can affect the daily lives of teenagers, such as unable to focus. A report on injurious motorcyclists and it has shown that 6,262 people in the study cohort with 38,701 person-years of follow-up and involvement in 495 injurious crashes.
Abuse of laws • The scenario states that there are a lot of teenagers who are suffering from mental illnesses, and a lot of them play computer games for a long time. If the computer games are the violent type, then it is reasonable to assume that they would be influenced by it. If the teenagers start doing what they do in the games and go on a killing spree, they might just blame it on their mental illness and escape the law. This might cause a lot of unrest in the community. • Most countries have laws that state that when a criminal acted under the influence of his/her mental illness, he/she will be acquitted if it can be proven. This shows that the law protects the criminally insane, and it can cause a lot of problems if they are not punished.
The scenario states that quite a number of health and psychological problems arise from the widespread use of technology throughout the teenager’s everyday life. Teenagers use PortAll for all their learning needs, PlayAll for all their recreation, social media for their communication and robots for all their housework. All these technology affects the teenager's mental and physical well being after a long term of usage. • In what ways might we reduce the over usage of technology in everyday life so that all these psychological and health problems can be greatly minimized in the year 2040 and beyond?
Job Distribution • Patrick- Came up with several problems, did partial research • Chuan Xin- Created and edited online portfolio, compilled research and problems, did some research • Yu Hao and Kah Xuan- Came out with some problems, substantiated with research
Patrick • I have learned from this project that I have no time for breaks this year. While researching for project, I sometimes take a break after searching for information for a long time. However, I regret taking breaks as after I managed to gather enough information, I had to stay up late to do my homework. • I realized that if I had not taken any breaks, I would have finished researching for project much earlier. Now I know that in the future, I can only take a break for at least 3-4 minutes, rest my eyes for a while, or else I won’t be able to finish my work early
KahXuan • Through the project, I feel that effective communication is extremely important. There had been some misconception through the project however, throughout the project, this factor had been solved. In terms of researching, initially, I had trouble looking for articles supported with statistic and evidence, however, as I proceeded, I knew how to phrase my sentences when looking for relevant link. Then, it was the level of detail for our research. • Most of the time, I had to look for more information to verify the fact. Then, any assumptions made will also have to be support. Even though there was a lot of time clashes, but we managed to overcome it by separating our jobs but at the same time, studied what each of us did. All in all, the project was extremely beneficial and I found the real purpose of researching.
Yu Hao • After several meetings together with my group mates, I find that time managing and proper job allocation is very important when we are preparing for Prelims. As we are all in Sec 2, work load increases by a lot and the time that we can meet up together is very limited. So, we will discuss what we are suppose to do on the meeting and throughout the upcoming 1 week that we do not meet up, we do the work assigned so that quality of the research would not be affected. • I would like to bring up job allocation as it plays a major part of our research. We would need to know who is stronger in what areas such as research, presentation etc so that we would ask the person who is better at that to do more in that area and less at his weaker area.
Chuan Xin After doing this project, I really marvel at the people who are creative in anything that they do. I realized that creativity requires a lot of natural talent by yourself, and that our brain has to work in overdrive in order to be creative. I also found out that research is not really as easy as it seems. The Internet is a great platform for information, but there is a lot of unrelated things that clutter up the Internet. It takes great patience and tenacity to be able to withstand the boredom of sifting through numerous web pages to find what you want. Time management is the overall factor that decides whether we will do well in our project or fail terribly. If there is no proper time management within the individual, then he will pull the group down because he cannot do the work that is assigned to him. That in turn, will cause the project to be uncompleted. This new category is really one that is rather unique as no one has ever experienced what it is like to be doing it, and I enjoy this new experience.
