Structures, Strategies & Composition Key concept 3 Key Feature 1 + 2 Evaluating effectiveness Adapt and refine structures
Key feature 1Evaluating effectiveness of Structure • Main reason we evaluate/monitor our performance: • To measure the success in exploiting a weakness (of opposition) or protect a weakness (of our own team) • To assess how well each player understands their role. • To assess how well each player performs their role in the pressure of a game. • To identify areas for development through practise • To monitor how performance changes as a result of fitness as play develops • To identify any changes in the opposition team that might influence play.
Observation's • At start to identify team and individual weaknesses • Match observation sheet • Focused Observation – 3rd (attack) phase of • Repeated at end to evaluate success of training programme
Example of how to evaluate during game To measure success in exploiting a weakness of the opposition: Weakness in Opposition: Physical/ technical/ mental weaknesses… E.g. Physical – Stamina. I would exploit this weakness by using 3 man fast break (strategy) to force my opponents to chase the ball up and down court and tire them out. I would measure this by: shooting statistics, if we got more success (e.g. shots at basket/ possession further up the court/ goals) later in the game.
SSC Key Concept 3 Key Feature 2Adapting and refining strategies • If your 3 man fast break strategy is not working you have two choices: • Adapt the strategy • Refine the strategy
Definition • Adapt = change the play in the strategy or change the strategy all together. Basketball = Change the play (1,2,3,4) in the 3 man fast break strategy or change all together to the 1 man fast break. • Refine = keep the same SSC (strategy = 3 man fast break) but work through a programme of work, develop any individual and team weaknesses
Why Refine? • Individual weaknesses/errors • Team weakness/errors • But OVERALL the selected strategy (3 man fast break) is the MOST EFFECTIVE for the performance. • Other strategies would have same individual and team errors and other (more) weakness would become apparent.
How Refine? • Programme of work • You are working through your programme of work • 6weeks of team and individual development • 3 periods a week • Double period = Team – Individual – Team structure • Single period = Team development and game practice
Effective programme • Practices selected to develop performance should…What should you be considering? • Specific – performance, individual and team weakness, level • Increase understanding of role within weakness and also other strategies • Develop cooperation and relationships with other players • Improve decision making under pressure
Adapting structures/strategies • Can be done during the game through internal feedback – thoughts on how the strategy is not working – Guard changes play • Can be done after a game, leading up to another game – through internal feedback and external data – match analysis • Match analysis could be collected during game (2 collectors = valid) or videoed which allows more critical analysis / Coach calls Time out and changes play or from 3 man FB to 1 man FB.
Programme of Work • What methods of practice have you used? • Shadow (could run play without ball) • Unopposed repetition • Opposed passive • Opposed active • Group practices – 3v0, 3v1, 3v2, 3v3 • Conditioned games – must set zone and only intercept in key • Game practice – 3v3 and 5v5 games
Individual work – Role Specific • Guards practising – Dribbling (Speed), passing, jump shots • Forwards practising – lay ups, rebounding, passing • Centre’s practising – rebounding, left hand lay ups, long passing (1 man fast break)
Task • Describe the programme of work you went through to develop the role you played or the performance you gave as identified in part (a). (6marks) • Answering this in diagram format • Only writing you are allowed to use is to put method of practice as a heading and the week number
Diagrams for the following • Shadow (could have ran play without ball) • Unopposed repetition • Opposed passive • Opposed active • Group practices – 3v0, 3v1, 3v2, 3v3 • Conditioned games – must set zone and only intercept in key • Game practice – 3v3 and 5v5 games
Situations and adapting/refining strategyKnowing HOW to answer the question • A problem arises and you can either: • Adapt the strategy during the game – run different 3 man FB or 1man • Q = What changes/adaptations did you make to address this situation? Justify the actions that were taken. • Refine strategy through 6 weeks training programme • Q = Describe the programme of work you followed to improve the weakness identified in part (c) (ii). • You CHOOSE either adapt or refine • Q = Justify the decisions you took to develop your performance within this structure, strategy or composition.
Situations & Adapting a structure • You need to describe (paint picture) of the situation in the – • What is happening • Effect on your teams performance • How you adapted (changed) the structure – new formation, who moves where, why? • Effect the new formation has on the game – what your team can now DO - off the ball and on the ball
2010 7c • Describe briefly a situation where this structure, strategy or composition was not effective. Explain why this was the case in this situation. (6) • Two main points: • 3man FB becomes predictable – Forward crowded out – less space/time/more pressure, lose possession, lower success • Guard dribbles one bounce too many – forward crowded, less space, more pressure on pass, pass blocked, guard forced to delay
Description = 2 marks, Explain = 4 marks • “Our fast break was breaking down because…predictable…defenders closing forward…pressure/cut off pass…” • Reasons (what causes the FB not to be effective) • “Because our forward under pressure…off balance…success rate went down…missing baskets…shots blocked…Also sometimes the pass was blocked…not as many chances to execute lay up…opponents ran fast break.” • “Guard delayed pass too long…they were under pressure…less space to feed pass through…not able to pass/blocked…delayed attack…more defenders…”
2011 7d • Justify the decisions you took to develop your performance within this structure, strategy or composition. • Either answer through adapting the 3 man fast break • OR • Training programme for 6 weeks
Adapting (during game) • 3 man FB – different play – pass to Centre, LH lay up • You need to show evidence of problem solving and decision making • Describe what you did, explain why you did it, then describe the impact it had (what happened) • “Called time out…discussed too predictable…guard too slow at passing…decided to mix up plays….pass to centre next three times…then pass to forward who passes back to guard…jump shot…after that guard calls plays as he sees them…more unpredictable…more space/time…increase success?” • Change to 1 man FB?
Refining (build towards future game) • “Not working because predictable…poor timing…poor decisions…poor support from centre…decided to work through training programme to improve effectiveness of 3man FB and also develop alternative plays…” • Programme of work • You are working through your programme of work • 6 weeks of team and individual development • 3 periods a week • Double period = Team – Individual – Team structure • Single period = Team development and game practice
